I'm new to the Jeep world but excited to get going. I'm looking at a 1976 CJ5 Renegade Levi (Edition) 's edition. It has a V8 AMC 304 with 80k original miles. Here are the specs. I'm trying to figure out if this is worth the $10k he's asking... seems high to me. There is a very minor crack near one side of a the roll bar and has a few small rust holes under near the steps, but other than that looks clear. Drove it today and it runs smooth, sounds great, stops great etc. It has no top, no wipers.

Not to me. The fact that he says it's a Levi (Edition) edition means nothing since it has new paint, gauges and seats.

:agree: and it has no top or doors

Some owners in my area have had five-figure prices on their CJs for over a year.

Rust and no top or doors... if he think it's worth $10k, I'm sure he'll be happy to kiss it good morning and hug it good night until something motivates him back into reality.

First, I don’t believe the mileage. CJs didn’t have the ability to show more than 99,999 before starting again. Second, it is a 1976 model which is a bastard crossover year with some parts form the 1972 to 1975 mid-range style to the final body style (1976 and newer.) Front brakes are drums (1977 & newer are disk) and the standard Blazer motor upgrade won’t fit the heater box (again, 1977 & newer will). A Supertop is going to add $800-$900 or so to the overall cost. To me it is worth at least half the asking price, maybe less.

My 72 is as nice as that. I would be hard pressed to get 10 for my rig. I would pay between 4 and 6 depending on my want factor meter.

Thanks all, this is great advice. He said he drop to $9k but I think on this Jeep with everything stated here my top # (due to high want factor:-) would be $7k.

I agree...10k is way overpriced for that rig. Sometimes you can get a good feel for what 10k can buy you in a Jeep buy hopping on ebay and looking around. You'd be surprised. At the 10k price range you can buy a lot of Jeep lol.

Here, this one's 15k buy it now, current bid is 7k (reserve not met) ...splurge and buy it :D

10k would buy a hell of a Jeep in TX. I wouldn't pay more than 4k for that.

i'd be more tempted by this:

Jeep CJ5

Is it me or the angle of the picture that it makes the jeep look longer than normal? Especially from the drivers sea backwards.
Btw, I agree with everyone else, you can get better for 10K

I'd have to agree on that CL find, lol. That'd be my purchase!

I was thinking too, if you have a 10k budget or thereabouts you can buy a something with a straight frame and a nice body, maybe a blown motor and put in it what you want. Assuming your buying bolt in parts you'd have a practically new drivetrain/lift etc and probably have a little money left over for a few extras. I did mine on a budget for about 6k with a reman motor, low mileage tranny, etc etc.

I still complain that I need another 4k to finish it up... conversion springs and a set of new tires, one piece axle shafts, selectable locker, etc etc etc...wait I think I need another 6k+ haha. :D

Good luck on your search.

I say walk away! I think it's worth 5-6K at most. I've seen complete frame-off restorations go for 10-12k. The last thing you want to do is start educating the seller on why his Jeep is worth half the asking price. Especially if they've got a emotional/irrational attachment to it.

You get this delusional logic from some sellers thinking: "I put $15,000 in this Jeep! I should be able to get most of that money back!!"

Sorry Bud!! It doesn't work that way! :)

Another of multiple Dittos...walk away. Expand your search on down to around SAT & West of Austin. There are quite a few nicer ones priced much cheaper in this region. Take 281 on down and enjoy the stroll. I had swung out to Eagle Pass and Houston to look at some when I was searching. Just take your time and don't get too eager.
