Guys - I have ALWAYS wanted a CJ7 and would love to hear from knowledgeable folks as to what y'all would recommend as to what the "best" option and year would be. I live in Los Angeles. I am currently looking at a 1984 CJ7 ....I would love to hear from you guys regarding what year may be the most desirable, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Hello smaze17! Welcome to our site! :chug:

Unfortunately there is no real answer to your question... Some like early CJs and others do not...

What do you want to do with your CJ???? :)

CJ is right, there is no real answer. Unless you have a very specific reason for looking for an 84, I would suggest that you open up the field and considder any year CJ7 from 76-86. Aside from drive trane changes, their all pretty much the same. In those years, there were difinately some better parts as far as trannies go, but Try to concentrate more on overall condition. If your Jeep has a solid frame, and a solid body, everything else will be easy to upgrade if and when you feel a need to. Buying a rotted of hacked up ride because it has some cool parts on it will bring you misery in the long run. Too many first time "Jeepers" buy bottom end, and become completely overwhelmed by the scope of work, the simply give up and lose money. Buy as good as you can afford right off the bat.

Buy the best example you can find and pay a little more for it.

Buy close to stock as posible and don't buy one with rust. Why stock? Because too many modified CJ's were done without a plan and you'll be frustrated and spend more money to fix there mistakes in the long run.

Look for the options you want in a CJ now because it easier to buy one the way you like it then to find the options later. Hardtop, AC, 20 gallon gas tank, T-176 4-speed, etc.

Make the seller pay for the smog and don't pay for your CJ until it passes. In CA it's the sellers resposibility to make it pass smog. Don't buy it, have it fail smog, and then spend a ton of money making it pass.

If you have questions on a specific CJ ask here first and we'll help you to make the right decision for what you want in a CJ.

Good Luck!

Smaze you really have to tell us what your looking to get out of your Cj.

Rock crawler ? Mud Runner? Trail Rider? Beach Burner? What type of terrain your gonna wanna run will go a long way in helping determine what Cj is right for you.

Thanks for the great posts fellas. I'm looking for a daily driver with some occasional off road...that's it. Nothing crazy....thanks again for all the great advice!!!

I didn't think CA and CJ's mixed... too much pollution control issues.
