CJ Database

Good Morning All,
New member here, I have always had an interest in owning a CJ though I have yet to. I just put a down payment on a custom restore for my wife. She loves CJs and wants one for a daily driver. We started out looking for one for general use and it morphed into a DD for her. Based on this I am still looking for one for me. Her's is a 84 CJ7 Laredo , painted Ford Grabber Blue, 258ci, 5 speed with a rust-free YJ tub. It started out with a hard top, now it has a soft top, 4 inches of lift and 33s.

I am looking for whatever strikes my fancy from a CJ2 -8. There is no telling what I will end up with. I am pretty good with a wrench and a multi-meter and not so good with a welder, so I think I can make it happen. If I found the right CJ7 with no engine I would certainly consider doing a diesel conversion to a MB OM617 5cyl.

All that being said, my question for you guys is, has anyone ever tried putting together a spreadsheet of off brand parts and components? It is mind boggling how many various brand parts are good or great fits on CJs. I have read dozens of threads and come across endless tidbits of info. This power steering pump works on this CJ, this brake master cylinder works here, this tranny is a direct bolt-on for a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , This ford rear end will bolt up and give you Limited slip and disc brakes, this chain link fence strap works on this seat belt, this Ford distributor cap, this head....you get my point. I would be willing to set it up in Excel and put it out there for everyone to update and add to if there was enough interest interest. There are some sure enough CJ Gurus on here and there are thousands of newbies like myself would are just begining this journey who could use the help.

I think the problem with a spread sheet is that it is almost literally endless for stuff that can be made to work and work right. Partially because people's definition of what is right is different from person to person.

I thought about that. I was thinking of pretty much bolt on parts with little to no modifications. Ford 300cid distributor for instance. You are right though, seems to be zero interest.

I am working permanently on a spread sheet for 1979 CJ7 mainly to organize my
spares adding all known alternative part numbers/suppliers, but far away
from being complete. I have only roughly 400 different parts, in total
1500, mostly NOS AMC...

I know I am a freak

Its not that theres zero interest. However its a very daunting task. If something like this were to start I think it would be easier to do in Sticky threads under each sub forum.

My thought was share it some how so every one could add items as they thought them and make it an ongoing living document do to speak. A year from now it would be a great resource.

I see what your saying and its an open honest good idea. Unfortunately everything would have to be verified before we could put it up. Contrary to popular opinion not everything you read on the internet is true. Even my statements. I urge everyone to continue to discuss this , it has merit and is pretty interesting.

We did something similar when we put together the Comprehensive database together. It took volunteers, plenty of time and research. Then we all proofread each other's work. A few things slipped by but overall I think it turned out pretty well.

Mirage, the database thing is a great idea, and if your willing to start putting one together, well let me just say
Like others have said the verifying part is the most time consuming. Every upgrade I've done to my 8 was thoroughly researched before buying anything, and some were more troublesome than others. For me, the project most difficult to get a clear answer for was the 4.0 head swap. It's quite likely most of the issue is/was my lack of mad computer skills so a trusted data base on a site I trust would've helped.

Very nice. Well I have the knowledge willingness and time to make a spread sheet I just don't have the jeep tech knowledge to do it. I can format it, set it up and share. Members can fill it in, email it to me and will smooth it, consolidate it and reshare for corrections and verifications.

Every time something is posted to the data base it opens a thread that shows up in "new posts". If the entry is bogus it will be be reported by more posts than can be kept up with by a mod. If the majority think it is good Keep it and I do not see any tight decisions. should be pretty easy to confirm.
