Hi All,

I am getting a used CJ plastic tank to replace a rusted metal tank ....

Wanted to learn from you guys if I can paint it ... it safe to paint the plastic tank (I believe its a polyethylene) ... do I have to prepare it first ... i.e.: apply putty etc ?.

Thanks for the input.

Kind regards,

Preparing a surface to to painted is important, like rough it up a bit with a light to moderate sandpaper then clean it. There are paints that are designed for plastic.

No to paint. The OEM plastic tank sits in a metal tub that 'protects' it etc.

LG is right. it also holds it in. If you don;t have one Rudys jeeps in findlay oh. has them as well as the sending units.

How about a rubberised coating such as Pasti-Dip or Dupli-Color ? I read those product can be applied to some plastic ... but not sure about polyethylene.

I am purchasing a new sending unit from MTS .... hope this is a good sender. I have problem with 15 gall sender from OMIX with Autometer fuel gauge as the needle move around a lot when I drive the jeep. Don't know the solution except purchasing a baffled tank ... I saw genright has it for CJ ... but expensive:eek:
So I really hope this MTS sender can somehow reduce ... i.e: slow on in-tank float movement.

Regards,

Jaya - The original jeep had a pulsing power supply to the gauge. This eliminated the effect of sloshing gas in the tank making the gauge jump all around.

Hi Hedgehog,

Ok. I will take a look on the wiring of the original gauge .. I think I saw it somewhere in the net.

I thought it was only heavy grease on the needle gauge thats prevent it from jumping around.

Thanks:chug:

No reason to put any coating on the poly(plastic)tank.
It won't stick anyway.

I can't quite remember the order of things, power goes into one of the gauges in the speedo, it is converted into pulses and a flat metal jumper goes between the two gauges. In a stock jeep you will see the gas gauge go up in several short steps.

Ok ... I will check the main speedo gauge too

Thanks.:)

LG - I have an issue with their diagram. They sat the jumper wire will be either red or black. The units I've seen had a flat metal jumper with what appears to be heat shrink tubing on it for insulation.

Hmmm, I wonder if that's something found on newer Speedometers. Generally the diagram is correct for the '75 except for that wire/ flat piece of metal. I didn't want that difference to throw the OP off track. When I was working on my electrical issues Rob at Willys works pulled out several Speedo gauge clusters and all had the same metal jumper.

Hedge, From what I have seen, that is better known as a jumper/regulator strap. It sends a variable 5 volts to the temp gauge. It is actually two strips of metal and they do wear out requiring replacement usually at the time of a gauge change. Some systems could just require a wire, depending how it is set up. They were originally made by Stewart-Warner and could be purchased over the counter at a Jeep dealer.

Okay, I was fishing for the right words for the jumper strap. I didn't know there were two pieces or that they could wear out. I did replace the insulation with heat shrink tubing, seems to work fine. I don't believe it's a resister, but it seems like a bit of over kill as a simple low voltage circuit wire.

Mine are a flat plate of copper.
Don't think SW was making the gauges, at the end of the CJ7 run.
