I tried the "search button" but I want to be certain. I have a 1979 CJ with a AMC 304 and GM Turbo 400 tranny. I want to upgrade to power brakes. My understanding is that YJ power brake setup will work. My question is what do I need from the YJ other than the booster and master cylinder .Is there any other brackets needed? By the way I have discs up front and drums in the rear .Appreciate any info or threads with info. Thanks.

Thanks old dog....in that link where he compares the old master cylinder to the YJ one, is that a firewall bracket he is talking about behind the YJ booster? Anyone?....

here's a link with some info YJ Brake Booster Upgrade
Interesting! I never heard that the YJ power brake booster worked a lot better than the CJ booster? I might have to look into doing this swap! My current power brakes are ok, but if switching to a dual diaphram YJ booster will make them grab a lot better, I see no reason not to do it?

Does anyone know if Cherokees use the same booster at YJs? It would be a whole lot easier to get a booster from a Cherokee since all my local pick-n-pull junk yards have them, and they almost never have any YJs.

Ok, I found the answer to my own question, sort of.....

Looking up part numbers on Advanceauto and Quadratech I've determined that the Cherokee does take a different part number.

I also found that Wranglers have different part numbers for 87-89 and 91-95. Will both of these work with the four bracket bolts that go through the firewall, and will they also bolt up to a stock CJ master Cylinder. I noticed that the master cylinder on a 91-95 YJ has a plastic reservoir. At least that's what Advance showed.

I'd also like to know if they both have the dual diaphrams and if either is better.

sorry guys but I never did the change, IIRC you want the newer one. (91-95) I was going to go this way but I'm thinking hydro might be better for me now. One thing is for sure, I need better brakes.

Do you know if the 91-95 will work with the stock CJ master cylinder?

I did the YJ to CJ brake booster upgrade last week and the results...drum roll please......FANTASTIC!!!:D If you have a CJ with sub par brakes you gotta do this.

As referenced by "Old Dog" in the second posting, I followed the instructions in his link and I have REAL brakes on my '79 CJ7 with a lot of pedal and can actually skid my tires on dry pavement (hard to find that this time of year in the Pacific Northwest by the way).

I purchased a 1987-1995 Jeep YJ brake booster brand new from NAPA for $AMC 150 including core fee (booster does NOT come with firewall mount bracket).

I went on Craiglist and found a guy parting out a '93 YJ and purchased his crappy brake booster and firewall mount bracket for $35.

I took his crappy booster core back to NAPA, was refunded $40 core fee which I then applied to the purchase of dual diaphram YJ master cylinder.

All parts assembled without a problem except the YJ master cylinder brake line ports are on the right (engine side) and the old CJ master cylinder brake line ports were on the left side (fender well). No problem though because the previous owner left plenty of brake line slack to unwind (bend) to the other side.

One other hitch was the YJ master cylinder brake line ports take a larger securing nut so adapters were purchased at NAPA as well.

One last problem the push rod to the actual brake pedal had to be extended. Cut the rod and welded a 1/2 inch coupler on the booster side. On the other half of the rod, cut 1/2 - 13 threads with a die and adjust the rod to your desired pedal heigth.

This upgrade is a must if you plan on wheeling with any family in your Jeep. Unbelievable difference!! :)
