Stock 1981 CJ-5 with GM 151 ci.
I have a 1981 jeep CJ5 with the stock GM 151 engine. It has been sitting for about 3 years.I cleaned the carb and plugs and put a new fuel pump on with fresh gas. The engine turns over and wants to crank but won't run it has gas in the carb and is getting spark. I was wondering what y'all might think is the matter with my jeep.

I have already tried that. The engine will try to run then but as soon as I stop cranking with the starter the engine sputters and dies.

How did it run before parking it? remove a spark plug and check to see if maybe they are gunked up. Correct firing order? Proper timing?

It ran good before parking. It was definatly road worthy. plugs looked good and I checked the firing order with a shop manual. set timing as best I could with it not running

Try a squirt of ether in the carb. If it runs on that then there may still be some gum in the lines or tank.

If you only cleaned the carb then a rebuild may be in order. It doesn’t take long for things to go bad, particularly with the blended gas of today. Also, assuming you have not changed the timing or messed with the distributor, make sure that there isn’t a vacuum leak, including at the bottom of the carb too.

I just wanted to see if it would run with out the carb kit. I want to make sure the engine is good before I dump a lot of money into it

As I have read, the motor cranks, wants to fire, yet won't run. I understand wanting to be financially responsible, however. As the motor turns I agree with previous posts, the carburetor will be needing a cleaning and rebuild.

It sounds to me like the timing is off. Try turning the dist. as you crank it and someone else dumps some gas in the carb.

Ill Try both of those things. Like others said I might just need to rebuild the carb but. It actually was pretty clean when i cleaned it. Thats why i thought it might run with out rebuild.

And one extra person with a large towel to smother the flames that will be shooting from the carb!! ( the less flames, the closer the timing is to correct!!)

Look and make sure the valves are moving. Pull the valve cover and have somebody crank it. Stand back it will spray oil. if the timing chain is broken or damaged the valves won't move which means the distrubutor is working.

Put a finger over the plug hole, it will compress on one revolution and not on the next. intake and exhaust. This will tell you about as much about your valves as pulling the valve cover.:D
