Hello there

I am looking at buying a 1987 CJ7 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and have been looking around for infos on the CJ7 but realized after a while that they stopped making them in 1986 and 1987 was the YJ first year.

So questions here is it possible that they made some of them in 87 ? (left over parts from the year before etc)

Or there is something wrong with the paperwork on that jeep ?

This is a Canadian jeep

Thanks

Jacques

First off Welcome to the site!!

I am not sure about that, What I have read that 1986 was the last year of the CJ7 but that was here in the sates. It could be that it is a YJ that has had the CJ front end put on to get rid of the squire head lights.

Any pictures of the Jeep? That would give us some Idea on the thing.

Here is a photos of it (only one i have) everythings on the jeep looks CJ7 and according to the owner it is an all original CJ7 excepted for the radio in the dash .
1 new paint job about 10 years ago.

Never been out during winter.

Ther rear flares are round so It should be a Cj tub also. Does the tailgate drop down or does it swing towards the side of the Jeep? Im thinking maybe it was a leftover 86 and didnt get titled until 87?

Im leaning toward the thinking it was a leftover 86 and the dealer didnt title it till it was sold. Jeep kept producing Cjs in 86 till they ran out of parts. They actually ran out of rear axles first but kept producing with a Dana 44 rear axle until other parts were depleted. That looks like a Laredo model. It also looks very nice. Id buy it. :D If you get the Vin # off the driver side plate in the windshield frame we can tell you all about it.

Thanks for the welcome, missed it earlier in your post.

Yes the jeep is in a very good shape, no rust whatsoever on it, has 185,000 km on it.
has a slight rough idle.

Any feature on it that I could look for that would garantie the unit as being a CJ and not a "rebodied" YJ to look like a CJ.

Thats a tough call. There are some good rebuilt tubs that were Yjs that you cant tell anymore. A member here has done multiple ones ( Certifiable Jeep ). Looking at the small pic again if he swears everything is Cj hes lying. Those doors are definately Yj. Cjs never came with 1/2 steel doors. If the tub is a Yj there should be body work on the driverside under the taillight. The Yj had the gas filler there , Cjs are on the passenger side. Take a cloth and magnet with you and run the cloth and magnet over that area. The magnet wont stick where the body filler was used to smooth the repair. You may be able to see it from the backside of the tub. If it looks that good though why worry about the tub swap?

But honestly the Vin# should tell us everything else except the tub swap.

Thanks for all the infos.

The fuel cap is on the right side (openned it to take a snif) but i will look for a repair on the left side.
Jeep was parked for a while when I showed up the batt was dead we had to boost it to get it going.

I will go and an another look at it and get the VIN if the owner let me.
Now for "why worry about the body swap" it is because if I buy this Jeep I will be paying for an original CJ7 , not a perfect CJ7 with a fiberglass body or a CJ7 with a YJ combination/fixed/front end/powertrain TJ/ rockcrawler/ tree climbers etc.

I am sure you anderstand what I mean.

Also I will have a better look at a 87 YJ to see if i can see parts of it in that one.

Good website

Thanks again

Jacques
