1985 CJ7 , my flywheel is making the loud ugly sound when starting. Do I replace the flywheel, or is it possible that the starter has shifted and I can shift and realign the starter?

I would start with the starter, are the bolts tight??:D

What that^guy said :D
The starter is non-adjustable, non-shimming...but if the bolts are loose it will drift around. The only other thing that could possibly be wrong is a chewed up gear ring on the flywheel.

Well, is it fixed?/

Why are all the starter problem posts with the straight 6? Any Ideas?

the ring gear on the flywheel often gets damaged. I have seen this many times on V8s where the thin sheetmetal shim was not replaced. Often you will see that only the engine side of the teeth are boogered. Pound off the gear, flip it 180, re-install it and the noise is gone...

I've seen that before also..........and normally caused by a loose starter...........just curious why all the posts seem to go with the straight 6?

I would have to confirm it but I suspect there are a fair number more 6s than 8s.

Most of the problems I have seen are electrical and I doubt that has much to do with engine size.:D

this one is kind of strange, I do not see many bad ring gears. It has been my observation that you have to really screw up the starter location to chew up a ring gear on a flywheel and a loose starter would be a great place to start. The lack of a bell housing/clutch cover is definitely not the way it should be done but I think it would take a while to start showing up as a problem on the ring. Once again 1/2 way jobs will eventually come back to bite you and lock tight is one of your best friends..:D

But I still want to know how this turns out.
