CJ7 or k5 blazer

Once agian I am having trouble deciding on my first car. I was considering what yall have said about a cj being my first car, and I was wondering if you have any experiences with a 1st or second gen blazer. I just LOVE old cars and the way they feel that is the reason I would like a blazer or a cj. Are blazers fun, or are they just like a plain old car? Do old blazers even compare to a jeep in the fun category? I think a blazer will be safer than an old cj just because of its size. I would like to have something that would be fun and also turn heads. Thank you.

a friend of mine has an 88 blazer that we cut the top off over the driver and passenger section. if he had not done that, i would not have said there was a comparison. but this being a cj site, you know which way we will all swing. if you cant find a blazer form 1968 to 1975, you can get one of the 80's ones and cut the top off. or get a cj which is already a ragtop. its your choice, in the end, you will be happy with either one

If you plan to drive around with a carload of friends, and you want to put larger tires on, maybe a mild lift.

Get the K5, And take it easy with the go pedal. Old Bronco's are good, too.

Overloaded short wheelbase CJ, and Inexperienced driver, and Lifted = Bad news.

Make a CJ your second vehicle. Even factory new, CJ's had many shortcomings. Shortcomings a new driver may not have the skill to deal with in a critical situation.

I also had a 77 4x4 chevy pick up that was better off road than the blazer was.

I think you should look around and see whats out there for sale and go drive them and see what you like better. Nobody here can tell you what you would like to drive everyday you need to go out and drive each and find out what you like best. There may not be alot out there to pick from. See what there is and what is the best bang for the buck and go for it.

I suggest you get either a 1968 cadillac ragtop or a 1972 ford LTD till you get the lead out of your young feet.

Thats what I learned in. If I had learned in a jeep or blazer I woulda killed myself back then.

I know jeeps are better, I love them! The problem is my mom OF COURSE. She wants me to get a tank, but I just love the old cjs. Are the early blazers fun at all with the full convertible? My favorite is the cj because they are so versitile.

They are fun and really cool looking with the top off. Lots of room for speakers and friends .

The top is big and heavy though. You would need a place to keep it or one of those hard top hoist to make it easy to put on and off.

Sounds like you like the classic type 4wd. You might also want to consider older Broncos and Scouts as well.

I would get some driving experience before you hop in a jeep. I rolled one and it's no fun. Get a full size truck and drive it a while. You won't regret it. Your young you have plenty of time.

For my 1st vehicles I have 3 Jeeps to choose from, 77cj7,99 tj, and a 56 Dj. I do like the look of the blazers tho.. If you're planning on going somewhat speedy or have a carload of friends I would say blazer, but if it's just you and your girl going out on a date or you just like to cruise and do some offloading, I would say a Jeep. If anything look for a later model Cj with widetracs like 82 and up if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure with the top off ether the blazer or Jeep you'll have a lot of fun. But as they say... I don't want to discourage you from buying a cj, but imho its probably the last vehicle choice for a teenager. I remember very well how I was when I started driving, if I had a cj i probably wouldn't be here now. You know, young and dumb and all that mess.

i drive the tj now because i have to save my Jeep for my senior project at school. the 56 Dj will get restored. those two will be up at Butler. the Tj will be my more of a main Jeep (gas mileage, and all that stuff) but the cj will be my secondary. neither of the 3 will be run during the winter. im a slow driver and pretty level headed in the vehicle with my friends. my dad has preeched to me about being safe in the Jeep because hes had them all through the 70s.

Had a 78 k5 and loved it..theres actually one that drives by my house once in a while thats raised /large wheels and tires..wine colored paint..outstanding looking vehicle..before I bought this CJ5 last week I was looking for an older k5 as that was my first choice..still is actually but finding a good one is hard to do locally anyway.

I had a '77 K5 between the two CJ's I've owned, the K5 had the Chevy small block 400 V8 and what with AC and a THM 400 tranny one of the first things that went mushuga was the 6 row radiator core, $500 in 1980's dollars!
Also it was a gas pig~full time 4wd, making by comparison my CJ's look like economy cars. But what with Buckshot Wide Mudder P38/15's (with 3" lugs when new) this rig was unstopable in the snow. One skiing trip to Mt Bachelor here in Oregon the road was closed by the State Troopers at a road block on account of a storm. Taking a look at how my K5 was set up, mine was the only rig they let through, much to the chagrin of onlooking rich folks and their new fangled rigs.
However I think in this instance it was more capable on account of the insanely aggressive profile that these Buckshot's once had. I think Gateway was the last to manufacture them but they ceased 6 or 7 years ago.
All that being said, I like the fun to drive aspect of my CJ more than the old K5 even with the back off.
