So with my ongoing battle with starter/flywheel noise I’m gonna order up a clutch so when I pull the Transmission I’ll replace it. My question is...the stock T-4 trans was swapped with a T-18 . It seems obvious I’ll need to get a clutch disc and pressure plate for the t18. I’m assuming the throwout bearing as well. What about the pilot bearing? And how do I go about getting the right stuff ordered when the trans isn’t oem? I’m sure someone on here has swapped the trans before and can guide me in the right direction. Thanks again as always.

Your best bet for replacing those parts would be getting your hands on the items you want to replace. I was looking at my Advance Adapters Installation manual and they do show 2 sizes for the input shaft on the T-18 . They are both different from the oem parts that the CJ came with. Going into more detail it shows a 1 1/16"-10 for the Ford T18 and a 1 1/8"-10 for the Jeep T18. When I replaced the clutch, the disc and pressure plate were ordered separate as the disc spline count did not come with a Jeep clutch kit.

Clutches are generally mix and match propositions. The clutch needs to match your flywheel, which has to be an AMC item. The clutch plate needs to fit a Ford input shaft. The pilot bearing will depend on which T-18 Transmission you have, the Jeep T18 pilot bearing is different from the Ford T18. The throw out bearing will likely be a Ford item, but maybe not. There that certainly was helpful. :) When you get the Transmission off all will be reveled by a few measurements. Mostly of the input shaft and the bearing retainer, the part that the throw out bearing rides on. Don't worry all the parts are available from NOVAK and Advanced adaptors.

T18 transmissions are all mostly the same with a few variations. Early CJ T18's don't have the very desireable low first gear and the location for reverse I believe is to the right and up (Posi will know best). The more desireable later Jeep T18 has the low first and reverse is to the righ and down. Honestly I can't remember where the Ford T18 reverse is, I think right and up, not sure. The Ford T18's all have the low first. To make it even more interesting the T19 is an all syncronized version of the Ford T18. The Jeep and Ford T18's have unsyncronized first gears. You are really not supposed to use the first gear on the road, it's a power or torque gear for a hard pull. ...... Even more fun, the T18 case and top were originally T-98 cases so thy have T98 casting numbers on many of them.

Then there is a whole resertation on bell housings. I'll leave that to others.

UGH. Ok thank you all. I dont have any casting numbers yet but I know that I have a super low first gear and my reverse is to the right and down. I guess I'll know more as I take the Transmission out.

It's not really that bad. All your questions will be answered when the Transmission is on the bench. Parts are available, finding a clutch can occasionally be interesting even for a factory set up with a stock T-18 . For instance I wanted an 11" clutch for my AMC 360/Jeep T18a. The fly wheel is drilled for a 10.5 or 11" clutch. Most available clutches are 10.5". Even some 11" clutches have 10.5' friction plates in them.

All 4.02 and some 6.32 (76.5-78) CJ T-18 's had reverse over and up. 79 is the only year CJ T18's had reverse over and down.
Ford's over and down.

If you go to the parts house to get these parts.
Take the old parts with you........
