I had a pro comp lift on a Cj and it rode pretty firm. Personally Id go with a 3 in BDS (Black Diamond Suspension) if I were in the market for one today. The Rubicon express one is nice also cause it incorporates Yj springs in the front giving you better flex.
Don't really have a price in mind CJ.
I'm pondering the 2-1/2-3" suspension lift, new engine mounts, Transmission & transfer mounts, axle stops, 4:11 gears & PowerTrax loc rite traction systems front & rear, new bumpers & a winch.
I have a 1964 IH fire engine coming that I should be able to get drivable, then sell. It was for me to use as I'm a Professional Santa, & take to parades, but the 5 won me over & I'll get a lot more use out of it for the money.
I'm looking @ Rancho, Skyjacker, Superlift & Trailmaster lift kit. Superior for Gears. Don't have a clue about mounts & stops.
What are you looking to do with this lift? General trails , rock crawling ???? I see your an older gent but hey your only as old as ya feel. Nitrous shot mud bogging???
A new fire engine! Oh yea! You have to create a fire engine rebuild thread! Did you have to apply for the job of professional Santa? I b et that trip up North each year is a killer!!!
Now I have to a little here... You have the CJ fever bad! What happened to the guy we knew just a short time ago that wanted to just fix the new CJ up a little and have a great driver?
If your planning on changing the gears, your going to have to set up everything anyway, there are many good options for carriers. How fancy do you want to get? Are you going to do the gears yourself?
As for a lift, my Black Diamond spring will be here in a day or so. I'll let you know what I think, but I have heard nothing but good things about them. There are many on the market as you listed, really, I don't think you can go wrong with just about any lift kit. Everyone has their favorites though...
I have a bad back, so I've tried about all the different spring/lift kits at one time or another...
What I can tell you is,
I put ProComp in the same category as 'Rough Country',
Rancho, ect.
If you want to feel every bottle cap and dime in the road, then these are the way to go for mall cruisers you can hang off the sides of and never get the suspension to flex.
As far as I'm concerned, Black Diamond or Old Man Emu are the ONLY companies I know of that will give you a spring that isn't a stiff as a wooden plank...
Rusty's Off road has some pretty good springs, but next month will be a year since I got my springs, and I'm STILL WAITING for all the parts I ordered or return money/credit for some shackles I sent back...
For slow speed operation (Trail Riding) it's REAL HARD to find a set of spring that aren't so stiff they will work at trail speeds, and 'Pro Comp' sure wasn't that for me in my '79 CJ7 !
I kept them about 3 months before stripping them out for a set of Old Man Emu YJ springs and never looking back!
I've got a set of 'Rough Country' springs for the same CJ I still haven't been able to sell! Exactly 3 weeks on them before I had enough and took them out, and I haven't been able to sell them (Because I'm honest and tell people they ride like a buckboard!)
The Rancho and Pro Comp springs for the same Jeep have gone out of here, but no one wants the Rough Country spring set, even with extended shackles and fresh Urethane bushings!
I'll try to answer all the questions. Professional Santa- I have several manuals & would like to attend the 1 wk Santa School in Mi or Canada. You are taught how to talk to & handle children & Parents. The fire truck came 1st. I ride a local engine though various subdivisions before Christmas. I have to ride by their time frame, which is usually during the afternoon. I came across the 64 IH in the refinery where I work. I had great plans, North Pole Fire Dept, "Santa's Own" & on the rear, Keep back eight reindeer. Then came the 5! You folks know the rest of the store. She'll be stret & trail driven. Deja has a couple of loctions that I intend to ride with them. Trails go 1-4 I think & I'll ride 1 & 2, (fields mainly). Don't want to tear her up, just have a better looking/handling Jeep. Suspension is is fair shape, but most of thr rubber parts are shot. Figure while I got her apart, put in the lift kit. Rears will be done by our shop foreman @ work, Their set up is beyond me unless I find folks in Deja that can help.
You guys are the best, that's why I'm here. I added a couple of pics to my album. On the fire truck was last year w/ a rental suit. This year was a home visit w/ my $1800.00 custom suit. A couple pics of the 1964 IH fire engine too.
I went with Old Man Emu and love it. Front and rear are both HD springs with their HD shocks and it still rides very smooth (better than it did stock) and it flexs real good. It costs a little more but well worth it in my opinion.
