Re: Craigslist Warn Winch!

$200 is a hell of a deal for that winch. It never hurts to try for a better deal. Is there any way you can hook it up to a battery to see if it works or not? I can't imagine anything being wrong with it as long as it was kept in a dry place.

Bring a battery with you.

Thanks for the feedback. $200 really is a fantastic deal. The owner didn't mention if it comes with the power cables. We're meeting up at a parking lot, so i'm not totally sure i'f we'll be able to power it up there.

Besides hooking a battery to it, is there anything else I should be inspecting on the Winch? I'm a total novice, when it comes to winches. Never could afford a good one. Had to make due with towing straps, so is there a winch buyers check-off list of things I should be looking for?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Craigslist Warn Winch!

Winch Buyers Check List - Not a bad idea at all.

Nice deal, I would send you PDF`s, but it is easier to go to Warn.com and get owners & parts manuals and all info on that winch.
Get a set of heavy duty leather gloves or synthetic line. A piece of carpet or small moving blanket. Shackles, tree saver, winch block, dead man, choker chain etc...
Take jumper cables to parking lot.

Since it is not mounted, about all you can do is make sure it free spools out, the remote works, motor winds in & out, cable/hook condition, wires/boots etc...
On the xd9000i the i is for integrated solenoids, they are part of the drum ends, not separate & serviceable like all others.

To make a check list you would have to do 2
1. Mounted
2. Un Mounted

I got my Warn M8274 w/CJ Mount for a set of red bucket seats out of a Monza w/covers & rear out of a Scout w/arms cut off he wanted $200.

P.S. also get a hook grab handle, a winch can/will tear off body parts (human).
Keep it safe, and others also!

Thanks for the feedback. From what you said about integrated solenoids it sounds like if the winch isn't working, i'm pretty much stuck with a brick. That nobody can repair it. Is this right?

Also, thanks the the suggestions on what to look for when buying a used winch. That's exactly what I needed.

Thanks for the help!

Sorry, I said you can not service them like normal winch sol`s (mounted to there own plate), you must remove winch ends off of drum to get access to solenoids, because the mount plate & cover is part of case.

Please: go to Warn Winch and download PDF #34590D3 which is xd9000i parts list, also download Owners Manual, Winch Instillation & Operators Guide and The Basic Guide To Winching Techniques

All parts are service/repairable. This winch is made in Clackamas, Oregon not in China. For $200 you can still afford to have it repaired and be ahead of the curve. Mine I broke the clutch housing which is $60+ or I can have my machinist make one for $40 or less, and I need the drum welded up and re machined for new seal surface (leaks oil out) so I need the service kit. But I did put on new cables/boots SS solenoid mount clamps and cleaned up my sol`s and made a remote w/ new tow light sockets & toggle, and a SS flip up license plate roller fairlead mount.

After you get it mounted do a load test.
Free spool out until you have never then no less then 5 wraps left on drum, anchor to a un-movable object w/Jeep off and in gear and e-brake on and real in and stop and check motor, cables & battery for heat every 10 or 20 feet. If you can real all the way in fairly cool and easy you have it made. If something gets hot find out why cable, motor bat ect...

Just remember winching can be one of the most dangerous parts of 4 wheeling, go slow and be care full, and watch for other people (seen to many you-tube videos of bystanders getting in the way and getting hurt).

Have fun.
I hope this helps.

I have replaced a solenoid on a xd9000i (belonged to my brother) no big deal.
I have a 9000i on my '67 CJ5 with no problems at all and good line speed.
A little cosmetic work and a small repair you should be golden. :) mike
