I have 3 speed manual Transmission , possibly T-4 . When I put in reverse or 1st its creeps, when I brake at stop light and put it in first engine dies. Supposedly prev owner just put new clutch. And ideas/suggestions?

Also I'm often have issues sliding into gears, sometimes its smooth and sometimes have to give it a little force. Grinds going into reverse if engine is running. When its not running slides right into all gears.

Well first a T-4 is a 4speed and it sounds like your clutch is not adjusted right. You should have about 1" free play at the top of the pedal.

down at the clutch pivot arm on the drivers side of the bell housing you will find an adjustable threaded rod, make it a bit longer and see how well it works. Do this until it stops creeping and grinding.:D

Adjust the pedal till you have 1- 1 1/4" of pedal free play.
BTW-your tranny is most likely a T-150 .
Grind'n go'n into "R" is common as "R" is not syncro'd. Bump into first and then go to reverse.

Lumpy you are the bomb!!!!! Took longer to change into work clothes than to fix it. Didnt even pick up a wrench.

I love this forum!!!!!!!

you all have already saved me so much money and time!!!

Took it for a little drive and seemed like pivot moved and began to get rough switching. Any suggedtion to keep pivot arm in place after adjusted?

After seeing the bad job of lifting your Jeep I would like to see a pic of this setup.

Easier to fix when we can see the issues.

To explain a little. This jeep was given to me by my moms husban, he only had jeep for two months he traded it for a little buggy. He told me that he put a new clutch in, but he isn't a mechanic, more of I can do anything half way good kinda guy. So that being said, heres the pics, lol.

Holy springs Batman if that isn't the craziest thing I have ever seen. Can you take some of the z-bar? It should have one spring to pull it back.

I'm wipe'n the screen and keyboard off-NOW:eek:
OP-You REALLY need to get a copy of the real factory service manual ASAP!

Holey hell batman! WTF is that contraption? What are all those washers? LMAO!

So what I see from the frist pic is you need to run the lock nut down to the adjuster and your spring should follow the adjuster so it pulls it back it's not going to do anything the way you have it.

When you said that a wrench wasn't needed it was obvious there was an issue.

1 - run the nut on the push rod down to the adjuster, that nut is a chinch nut. It's meant to lock your adjuster down so it doesn't move. Adjust the clutch properly, use wrenches to tighten the nut to the adjuster.
2 - There should be a spring between the clutch fork and the bell housing. THe spring will have a squared off hook end. look at your clutch fork pictures you will see two holes. the spring goes through one and locks up in the other hole. The round spring end goes in a hole in the bell housing. This keeps the fork from riding the through out bearing. A through out bearing won't last for long if it's spinning.
3 - I like to run an additional spring between the fork and the adjuster. I figure it keeps both in contact with each other.
4 - You need to replace your dust cover or inspection shield. I.E. you shouldn't be able to see your starter ring gear. Lots of dirt up in there is bad.

After some more research I am afraid that inner clutch spring was not installed correctly. Making me nervous thinking about having to drop tranny to install clutch for correctly. Any thoughts? Thanks again fellow Jeepers. :)
