I just opened the rear diff on my 69 CJ5 to see if it was a candidate for a lunch box locker and discovered it already has a power lok locker in it. I know nothing about this type of locker. How do I know if it's working right (wheels spin independently when in the air if one tire is held) and how do I know if it needs to be rebuilt????

I would recommend installing that lunch box locker. The power loc, if it is should have four gears in it as I recall. If it only has two gears in it, then it would be a trac loc. Both of them are clutch units and will wear out.

A new locker may be more positive, but don't sell the power-loc short. It is one of the best positraction style units out there. They are rebuildable and parts should be available.I believe thay where OEM option in that era of jeep. Both of my CJ5 's have factory powr-lok units that are still working well. The powr-lok has a two piece case bolted together.Hermtheoverdriveguy has parts and info.
The thing that makes them work so well is the ramp cross pins that apply pressure to the clutches as the load increases.I have no experience with a lunch-box locker .Others may have input here as well. :) mike

Do both wheel spin the same direction when you spin one?
To test the clutches. Put one wheel firmly on the ground.
Put a torque wrench on a lug nut of the wheel in the air. Now, apply torque and if you get above 30 ft/lb before the wheel turns. Your 'good'.
Put that 'lunch-box' locker in the front if you can.

I will add one suggestion to what L G said .To test with the torque wrench I would place the socket on the axle nut(you should have tapered axle shafts) rather than lug nut for a better
torque reading. My power-lok units are quit hard to turn one wheel with the other blocked.Like it takes two hands and a lot of effort. :) mike

The procedure I listed, came from the folks that make the power-loc. ;)

hey no problem, the one i read come from the same folks, but they said to attach a adaptor to the lug nuts so the rotation is in the center.in the op,s case with a axle nut the adaptor isn't needed.they used power-lok for many applications. mike

It is the four gear power lock unit. Thanks everyone for the testing procedures. Mine seems to be working so I'm going to leave it alone for now and I will install a lunch box locker in the front axle. I really ought to be able to get stuck then! lol

I have heard of those things being modified, like adding extra clutches or something like that. I had one once and remember power braking to get the thing to lock up to work best. Make sure you use the additive for the clutch type units. I have seen guys having issues with a full time locker in the front like when in the rocks, when in a heavy rock area like Moab, Utah, I have seen most guys just unlock the front diff just so they can steer the thing. This gives the switchable locker an advantage btw.

PL info.......

You shim up a PL by removing 1 clutch disc on each side and add a bellville washer in it's place.
Yes to the additive, it a must.

Hermtheoverdriveguy has a instruction page on how to setup the power-lock.It can be setup loose, normal,or tight. the additive is called "friction modifier" if you ask for it at the parts store. :D mike

"Friction Modifier"? Isn't that next to the Sex Wax? :p
