In the process of rebuilding/ restoring my wife's 84 CJ7 I had to tear down the rear axle due to age and wear. Oddly, even though it's a wide track axle, it has 11 inch brakes with the finned drums....is this an anamoly? I thought all CJ7's had 10 inch rear brakes.

Looks like someone replaced your rear AMC20 with a 44, 84 CJ were no offered with a 44 axle. That would answer the larger brake question.

Yes, I understand that, however, I was under the impression that ALL CJs had 10 inch brakes, including the late 86's which had the Dana-Spicer axles. That is the reason for my post/question .

Nope. 1972-1975 had 11" brakes factory.
1976-1978 had 11" as well.
Somewhere in the 78-79 area both 10" or 11" on the rear were possible.

In the process of tearing down your wife’s Dana 44 to find 11” fined brakes is not an anomaly.

No, 76-78 CJ7 came with 11" brakes.

STD for the 44 use.
Your '84 was a PO change over.
Can you post some pictures?

I have attached a few representative photos of the chassis and brakes. I should point out that all I received when I bought this, was a heap of disassembled parts, rusty :dung: and assorted junk. A Transmission filled with water and rust, axles with mismatched, rusty gears and botched lifted suspension. Now, 4 months later, its finished and ready for the body shell.
