driveshaft M.I.A.

driveshaft M.I.A.
Top number ? Good question but I bet someone here knows. There is not much they don't. The bottom 2 are 3:73. And then 41 11 it's your gear ratio 41 divided by 11 = 3.727

A couple more notes on the TCase

I said it was a Dana 20 . These look alot like the Dana 300 , especcially from the rear. The difference is how the shift lever is attached. The Dana 20 has a tubular bar sticking out the front that the shift lever is attached to.
The Dana 300 has 3 tabs that hold the linkages.

One other thing is there is a breather hose attached where the fill plug usually is. Most Dana 20s don't have that. Most use a breather cap on the rear output shaft. I can see the breather cap is still on this Dana 20 .

"And although I can't disagree with Tinman22, that does look like a Saginaw 4 with the shift linkages on the side but I have never heard of one in a 4 wheel drive"

Not as popular as other Transmission conversions, I know of at least 2 conversions still on the road.
AA supported that adapter/s at one time, maybe they still do.

Sag 3s came in early blazers and some sag 4 made it in also. More common really was a novak sag4 to Dana 20 adapter nice and short. Does it have hei or points ? Got a pic of the problem.

so i was driving home from vegas last night on the 15 freeway, and just as i passed zzyzx rd i hear some horrible noises and feel some very wrong vibrations. after coasting to the side i get out to find my drive shaft has sheared off and is now somewhere behind me on the freeway. now that i have to replace it, im wondering if now is the time to move the motor forward which sits a little too close to the firewall for me. is this as simple as moving the motor mounts forward and getting a longer driveshaft?

I'm still wondering why your driveshaft would shear off without making noise or vibrations for days or weeks before it broke.
Did you go back and get it? Where did it break at?

If you can get your fingers between the firewall and the dist. you have plenty of room to take it out. Most chevy motors have to sit close to the firewall to have clearance for the fan.

i have a good 6 inches at least between the fan and the radiator. i will have to give the bfh a shot and see if that gives me enough space. right now the distributer has points. i tried an adapter since there was no where near enough room for the distributor cap for the electronic ignition. the adapter failed after 2 days. i was not able to retrieve the drive shaft, couldnt see anything on the freeway at night, and my frogger skills are not up to par :D this is all i have left of the drive shaft.

So how bad is the pinion yoke?
Your right they did put your engine really close to the firewall. You must have a really short rear driveshaft.
I'm kinda surpised you get enough air around the engine to keep it cool.

Just out of curiosity you wouldn't happen to have scraped off the vin stamp on the front of the block did you ? Bell housing has kinda peaked my interest.

this is the only number i was able to find, had to trace it with a marker to make it visable

from what i can tell, no damage to the pinion yoke

Sorry premature posting. The reason Im asking is,that's a truck bellhousing and a 4 speed. VB makes it a 1969 255 horse 350 4 bbl .WE makes it a 175 horse 283 2 bbl both manual out of a 1969 2x4 truck. I've been looking for the WE driveline for my 1969 Chevy for 2 years! Some guys have all the luck!

went and double checked, definately VE, only other number i could see was on the side of the block 379

Gm didn't have a VE suffix code But the B usually looks like an E if it was hit light. Too bad the motor is so close to the firewall and you can't see the casting number behind the drivers side head on the block.

i am now back in afghanistan, looks like i will have to wait a while before i can get it fixed and back on the road. thanks for all of your input and help :)
