Another thing on the to do list is figure out why my engine will randomly die sometimes when coming to a stop. Usually it starts right back up with no problem and won't do it for the rest of the day.

Not sure if its related but the gas smell from this jeep is pretty strong so is it possible I'm flooding it out somehow? How to adjust for that?

I check all my vacuum lines last night with my father in law and we noticed the only problem was the hose from the air of to the top of the engine was disconnected, reconnected it and didn't have any issues last night until today it did it again as I was slowing down for a light.

And lastly, I've noticed that sometimes when I turn the key off, it keeps trying to run for another second or two, then dies.. Is that normal or another one of those "old car things"? Let me know fellas, been great help since I've joined. Thank you

I would start inspecting for an over rich fuel burn. Pull a spark plug to check for a black soot on the electrode. If so,this could be a carb issue caused from something like a leaky needle & seat, a leak in the carb float, or just a stuck float.

So do you think a carb rebuild/cleaning would be good?

If you have a rich fuel burn, it is possible that an adjustment would be all that is required. If you have a filthy carb inside and out, and it is leaking gas thru the gaskets, then yes, I would recommend rebuilding it. At least you would know when the last time a carb overhaul was done when future issues come up. Find out if that gas smell is from unburned gas out the tailpipe or from another source.

Is there a good tutorial on the forums for removing, rebuilding/cleaning and tuning the carb.?

I've found MC2100/2150 details just about everywhere; some better than others.

Here are four that I have had bookmarked for comeback reference:

I'm not familiar with the emissions systems on a 79 but it sounds like it could be a misadjusted or bad throttle stop solenoid, esp. when you say it keeps running for a couple of seconds after key off. Check your FSM and see if you are supposed to have one and make sure its working properly.

i had a problem very similar to that and it was as simple as ajusting the timing due to the distribiutor cap being loose

Carb Rebuild kit time...

Here are some pictures of the carb on it if someone can help identify it... null_zps6fe09aca.webp

And this is what the old plugs looked like when I changed them out...

That does look like a Carter 1bbl. - Ditto: Pics without the breather would help! :D

Checked with the local Advance Auto Parts and they can get a Carter Carb rebuild kit and when looking in the computer it looked like the only one they could get. So its possible that may be it, but still not sure?

You can tell if its a 1 or 2 barrel by looking down the throat. :chug:

But it's a 2 barrel. That has a rectangular 4 bolt base, the two barrel has an oblong shaped 2 bolt base.

I replaced the old fuel filter last night, and it's been running like a champ since. Still takes a pump or two to start the engine from being "cold" (even though its in the 80s here), but didn't die on me today in my neighborhood like it normally did... hopefully thats all the problem was.

Replaced it with a clear Mr Gasket filter from Advance Auto Parts for about $13
