Ever BROKE This?

Had bad motor and trans mounts.... changed them out a couple of weeks ago.
Everything has been fine, then the other day I went to shift gears and the shifter was in my hand.... not connected anymore!


Not sure really what to call it.... the shifter goes down through the boot, then into this mounting plate? then is bolted to the top of the transmission...

(1) What is this called? I have searched all over the web, cannot find this part anywhere.






(2) Can I just have it welded back up?

Also noticed that it had two bolts holding it down on the front, two in the middle and one on the back... the back one was broke off.... I am thinking that the back on was already broken due to the bad mounts it got stressed over time and cracked the mounting plate and then finally broke. But I haven’t ever seen anything like this and hoping somebody could give me some insight if this very well could be the case, or do you think it all came apart at once?

also in my Info... I think i have T176 listed as Transmission, well after doing research today, I am pretty sure it is T4 instead, I will update my Jeep Info.

this looks like it's going to be a jukn yard part. call it a top cover, that should work.

Yep...A couple years ago as I was panicking and the tub was filling with water. I pretty much ripped it out trying to get into reverse.... I then fumbled to hold it in place and try to get in gear in the water. Never trust a friend when he tells you he knows it shallow and you can't see the bottom, especially after you tell him you don't see any tire tracks coming out the other side. Luckily there was a nice buggy there to winch me out real quick.

You should be able to weld it right back on if it broke around the base. You prob don't need that one bolt, they are enough to hold. But since you have to do plate, might as well tack weld an allen key or something to it and unscrew it so its done right.

never seen a shift tower break, I think that one is a junk yard find. I do not think anyone makes those anymore
and I do feel the idea about not having all the bolts is what did it,it was stressing every time you shifted

Never saw a tower break like that. Probably a good reason to keep the bolts tight.

Did snap the shifter off one winter when it was -20F. Only had the shift knob in my hand WTF

I'll get it welded back up this week and hopefully have back going b4 weekend.

I was on the side of the road with a hat clip on light and a pocket knife. Trying to figure out what to do... Ended up cutting carpet back pretty good so I could tell what the heck happen. I am going to rip it all out and rhino line the inside.

Any suggestions on the best DIY bed liner brand?

I agree about welding it. And decent welding shop should be able to make it good as new for only a few bucks. I'd also get that broken off bolt out. If you drill and use an easy out, keep the metal dust out of the tranny. I suppose you could clean the top really well and tape over the openening and then drill it.

For added insurance, you should also glue the tower to the case with silicone when bolting it on. Every little bit helps.

Don't waste time welding that, call around and find a replacement. It is cast aluminum which welds for and obviously not good cast aluminum. There is no way you will ever get any kind of seal, it won't be flat and when you tighten the bolts you will put stress on it that will break it again. I don't think there are a shortage of T-4 transmissions in the world, they used them in quite a few cars and light trucks, I think.

Thank you for the offer..... but I had my fahter n law weld it back up, and I removed the broken bolt from the case, got it all put back together and it all works perfectly.

I even stripped the carpet & left behind glue, then rhino(like) lined the floorboards, looks great... but now I have a heater core leaking, so this weekend's project is to change it out.

Have you already upgraded the heater blower motor to one for a late 1970's K5 Blazer? If not, I highly recomend you do that while replacing the heater core! The flange on the motor is identical so it'll bolt right up to the heater box, but the motor itself is bigger, so you'll need to cut the hole in the firewall out a little so it'll fit through it. That bigger blower will make all the difference in the world when it comes time to use the defroster. It also doesn't suck not freezing your arse off in January.
