My CJ5 has a bad crank( #4 rod has a knock). While looking for parts I noticed that rod bearings are made in 0.01 increments to 0.080. Can these cranks be ground to 0.080 undersized? I believe these engines were built to mil specs but I don't think typical civi engines can handle over 0.040 under.

Thanks,

I know they sell bearings for the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l up to .060 under but I don't think they are recommended.

If the engine has never needed a crank turning before - I'm sure your going to be OK.

getting a parts engine for a F134 Hurricane should not be to hard, keep checking craigs list, and it may be a smart thing to have. as a lot of parts can be reused as tolerances are not as modern engines.
I commend you for sticking with that engine, it is a part of history.
A lot of guys will rip them out looking for more HP, but that engine is a great engine for wheeling as it has a lot of torque where it is needed, low down, It is a great engine

Thanks for the feedback. I am leaning toward having my crank ground and keeping everything original. I've been told that I can have a weld overlay put on the crank and then tun it to standard specs. However, since good parts suppliers have the bearings I'll need, that looks like a reasonable choice.

Does anyone have a manual that list acceptable under size rod bearings?

If so please send the reference.

Thanks
