I'm an aircraft mechanic looking to make my tools a little bit more mobile, and was looking for some kind of oddball vehicle to haul my tools around in. I looked at VW buses, Dodge A100's and Corvan's, and then I found an FC-AMC 150 Jeep for sale down the road from my house.

It's in really good shape, and I just have a few questions. I know that they were built on the CJ5 chassis, and this one has the 4cyl. "Hurricane" engine. I'm a very dedicated hot rodder, and 4 cylinders just happens to be 4 too little, so I'd really like to put a small block chevy in it.

I'm just wondering if anybody could help me out with tips, advice, or any places I'll be able to find parts for this thing. I have a 350 Chevy and a Saginaw 5spd. that's what I would really like to use. But if it could be done, I also have a 455 Olds. engine out of my Bel Air hot rod that I've been itching to put in something.

v8 swap on 1956 jeep - Early CJ5.com > Forums I have heard these guys know there 5's so you can read up on this and use the search tool for more articles on the V8 swap.
 
My friend is swapping his engine for a SBC in his FC170. Haven't seen it for awhile, don't know what type of progress he's made if any. Here's a site that I sent him that is just for FC170's. Good luck with your project!

Thanks for the help, I'll try to keep posting with information on the build. I'm normally a strictly Chevy guy, but I saw this and couldn't pass it up, I'll make sure I post some pictures.

Is your T/A got the i think 455 shaker engine or the turbo engine?
 
In 1982 the V8 option was the 305, I have that engine pushing 500hp, it's a beast. Turbo Transmission Am's have the same engine as the turnbo Grand National GNX. They were only done for the 20th anniversary Firebird in 1987. The shaker T/A's were 2nd Generation cars. The 455 I have come out of some random oldsmobile junker, I got it from a junkyard for my Bel Air hot rod, but I can't drive it that much anymore so I pulled the motor and pickled it.

IMHO smallblock fords are easier than chevy due to they are slightly smaller lighter & have a front mounted distributor.;)

Wow 455 olds a lot of torque, kinda big though.
 
If stock can handle a mild 350 that's prolly what I'll leave it with. I'm not looking to crawl it or do a lot of mudding, I just need something cool to haul my tools around that can travel long distances at highway speeds. I don't know anything about jeeps really, I know I have a Dana 44 out of an old Scout laying around here somewhere, maybe I'll put that in it. For transmissions I have several turbo 350 automatics, but I have a Saginaw 5spd I'd like to put in it.
 
Also, I'll leave the 4cyl. in there before I put a Ford engine in it. I'm sure they're good, I actually have a 302 around here, but, I'm a hardcore GM guy.
 
The 302 is a rock solid reliable motor with a huge aftermarket following that makes it as cheap to build as a SB chevy.
But we all have or hang ups.;)
 
You might breakout the tape measure when thinking about you tranny package.
Isn't that a 80" wheelbase vehicle? ;)
 
That's pretty close, it's 81", it'll probably take some driveshaft shortening, but I have a jig for that, so it's not a big deal at all. I've done crazy, crazy things to cars, I've just never really messed with jeeps and all this four wheel drive stuff. Maybe I'll take out the front rear, and the Transfer Case and put in a Mustang 2 front end. Maybe a Chevy 3.73 10 bolt in the rear? Haha, just kidding, I know better than that.

If you check out my rig you'll see I know a little bit about modifications.
I didn't say it's not possible, but IMHO when you try is stuff long trannys & longer engines into SWB rigs you end up with really short driveshafts also steep U-joint angles. That cause problems down the road. I guess that's why the factory waited till the CJ7 to put in a turbohydramatic Transmission .;)
 
Hi all, I'm new here but not to this swap. I did it to my FC150 over ten years ago. Still running strong. Let me know what you need. I put a 350, turbo 350, np205, chevy 12bolt rearend, 373 gears and 1976 chevy front disk breaks. The rear drive line is short, but I installed a cv jointout the rear of the tranfercase.any help let me know. G3
