whats your guys thoughts on them. i found a set on cl brand new for $100 for the pair. i know you have to ground the starter solinoid. is there any down falls to them.

The thing I've seen with fiberglass is theres a big difference in quality.
The good glass will take a good tree hit and still look good.
A low quality glass will break or spider web.
Steel would be easier to fix if you got a "dent" but the fiberglass will never rust. And I know you live in the rust belt.
For $100 a pair I'd go for it.

probably have to ground the lighting also. I dunno if it will ground thru the bushing that holds the grille in.
As long as you don't get into a tight spot or crawl rocks, they should work great for ya!

dont do alot of rock crawls. just trails and muddin.

They get ugly real fast hitting a tree.

Like Old Dog said - there can be a big difference in quality.

But $100 is a good price.

Wonder what fiberglass would look like after this one?

I like metal!

thats bad. i dont think i would get myself in that position.

But those darn trees around here like to jump out in front of you.

One just never knows!

Squirrels tried it several years ago but found out some Jeeps don't swerve.

SMALL WORLD....
If the fenders were in Dayton-Ohio, my buddy bought them yesterday. New fenders from 4WDH.

I have a fiberglass tub and fenders on my jeep. Running steel grille and hood. I had to run a ground wire to the starter solenoid since it was on fender. Winch is grounded to the frame. Headlights, offroad lights and horn grounded to the grille.
A 3/8" treaded grounding stud was installed on the passenger side firewall near batteries. Majority of all grounds (inside/outside tub) go to stud. Regular sized battery cable is connected to stud from battery.

Too bad you missed out. That was a good deal. I like fiberglass for the rust reason alone. And if you hit a tree like that CJ5 above it would be toast anyway. That hood and fender is trashed and metal or not, they are trashed. My 5 is all fiberglass and the CJ8 project is going all fiberglass as well. Only the grill will stay metal and maybe the hood if I don't feel like using the glass one I have.

i think im going with fiberglass. i missed the deal cause i had to wait to get christmas money lol. but im still on the hunt.

i found me a set

now my ? is they are purple and i just want to paint them flat black until we get a body. i never messed with fiberglass before. is there any certain sandpaper grit i should use so i dont scratch it all to hell.

If the guards have a decent finish on them you shouldn't have to do much to prep for flat black paint. Firstly, give them a wash to make sure any PVA is not on the surface. Then give them a wipe over with a rag containing grease and wax remover to make sure there is no release wax.

Then paint :-)

If you want to scuff the surface of the glass first you can use either a scotch pad to remove the shine OR some 600+ grit emery paper with tons of water. go up to 1,000 grit paper if you want it real real smooth :-)

hope this helps.

PS, im biased but have personally seen fiberglass and carbon fiber panels get smashed and walk away with far less damage than steel.

Difference is that glass has a degree of flex and memory that steel simply does not have. ALSO, a cracked glass guard is much easier to repair than a steel one which is folded in half!

Fiberglass has pros and cons. My fiberglass fenders took a beating and wasn't to wild about them. Possibly a cheaper pair. One good thing about fiberglass, my hood flew up while going 50mph and didn't crumple the hood just put a scratch across it. and was able to buff it out for the most part. The glass windshield however didn't survive. That's some scary **** least I had no doors on and could do the ace ventura move. Hah

well i have sanded some of the areas of concern i had. there are some cracks in them but they are not all the way thru the fender. should i worry about them and if so whats the best way to go about fixing them.

If the fender is still holding its shape and it does not feel weak where the cracks are- don't worry about it.

ITs probably just the gelcoat (which can be brittle) which has cracked.

would a filler primer work to fill them before i paint them?

You could put down some epoxy resin and fiberglass cloth in those areas of concern. Mine held up good from further cracking when I did this.
