Flat towing a CJ7.

Flat towing a CJ7.
Towing only 20 miles, I would think you'd have zero issues using a drawbar. Unlock the front hubs, put everything in neutral, and unlock the steering column.

Anything over 300 miles, I'd be thinking perhaps alternative methods. I've flat towed my CJ5 behind both a 2002 Chevy S10 Blazer and a 1996 F150 with no problems. But that's not saying there aren't problems waiting to happen....

maybe ill just go for it and go slow.

Best of luck, and let us know.

Never really realized how important a question this is, we have 3 pages of information on a subject that comes up at least once a month. It seems that about all the answers related to flat towing would have been answered dozens of times. But to this boards credit the question of flat towing a CJ is always answered enthusiastically by it's members. It kinda makes me proud that folks are so engaged.

I remember many years back I heard a few stories about people flat towing jeeps for hundreds of miles behind motor homes and not reading the correct way to tow and the Transfer Case getting so hot the whole jeep would catch fire from lack of lubrication, then reading about fixes or what to do to correct that. Been a long time since I've heard of this happening now.

Here's why you shouldn't flat tow a dana 300 - Pirate4x4.Com : 4x4 and Off-Road Forum

On a side note, I just purchased a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE, regular cab, standard box. 4x4, Z71, 5.3L, 6spd auto. It can be flat towed by simply putting the Transfer Case in neutral.

Same for my old 2002 Chevy S10 Blazer 4x4.

However... If given the option, and I was traveling several hundreds of miles, any vehicle would be tied down on a trailer that has electric brakes on both axles.
