1977 CJ-5 '83 amc 258 straight six, motorcraft 2100 carb ,inline fuel pump, 1000 cca battery ,T-175 tranny,
silly and quick question. i have a 1983 scrambler project that i want to throw a ford 5.0L into. i've been doing a lot of reading on others swaps and one area that is kind of been neglected in the right ups is the fuel pumps they used.

i know there are the generic inline ones at the parts stores. but i really, really don't like these. i have one on my CJ5 and hat the thing. if there was another way to have a electric pump on a carb i would do cartwheels! i have to replace them so often that i keep a spare in my glove compartment just in case. they leak all the time, or the burn up. i have mine hard mounted to the frame and lower than the tank. so let'snot get side tracked that way. they just suck.

is there a later jeep/other vehicle that has a stock style in tank high pressure fuel pump the will mate up directly to my tank? and have the right depth to pump right?. i can always work with the sender being off a little. it's the pump that i need right.

any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks

funny that you posted this i am currently working on an 83 CJ7 with the 5.0 swap and I installed a new tank with the the pump in the tank like any modern vehicle. As soon as i get the chance i will get all the info on the tank and company that my customer purchased it from. it was a really simple installed and did not require any major modifications to the mounting area.

i was hoping that there was one that would allow me to use my existing tank. but i'll take the info just incase i have to find an alternative.

ok so he had an after market tank but essentially all it is, is a stock 86 and up mustang fuel pump (in tank) i will have to check on the dimensions but you should be able to put that pump directly into your cj tank and just run new fuel lines and wiring for the fuel pump. if you need any further advice or info send me a message

I hope I'm not over-simplifying this - but there's a couple of Holley Mighty-Mite pumps that I would suggest, along with a pressure regulator (depending on what PSI your carb will handle). Holley 12-428 and 12-429 are both great pumps with great dry pull so you have options on mounting locations. I have a 12-428 at present going to a bypass regulator, with 5psi to the carb and the rest going back via the OEM return line.

cool that's what i was hoping for. an over the counter actual car fuel pump. yay! but yeah, if you can find out the dimensions of how deep it would go into the tank. and the diameter of where it mates up to the tank. that would let me know if it will work for me. and if you have a part # that would be awesome.

i'll have to look into them as a replacement for the one for my carbed CJ5 . i'll need a higher psi one for the fuel injection that i'm going to put in the scrambler.
that's why i was looking for a stockish style one for it.

Ah - I didn't catch the EFI part of the equation... 10-4.

sorry for taking so long to get back to you. as far as I can tell yes the stock mustang fuel pump/sending unit will work in the tank 1984-1997 Ford Mustang Fuel Pump Hanger Assembly - Carter P74635H - - PartsGeek.com
however let me warn you about a few things first. one the stock cj tank will need to be cleaned out really good (unless new) as you dont want to suck up and destroy your new in tank pump with some sort of dirt or rust particles. second and more important is the stock cj tank is a non baffled tank so when the tank is low 1/4 and less or on extreme angles while off roading the fuel will not stay in place and you will run the pump dry or collapses the sock. (built in strainer) if that collapses then it will have to be replaced and that means dropping the tank again. this is one of the advantages to buying an aftermarket tank as you can get one with baffles for fuel injected set-ups. feel free to pm if you have more questions or what have you.
