Ford 302 and Dana 300 Need Trans advise

Hi. I am new to the forum and did a little searching before posting this, but could not find any answers to my particular problem. I have 1981 CJ7 that my father-n-law bought for my wife when she was in High School. She never could figure out the stick so my father-n-law drove it until somewhere in the early 2000's when the engine blew and then it sat until around 2011. My son and I stripped it to the frame, had the body patched and repainted and got it ready for a new engine. A friend of mine had a 302 out of an old Mustang and it bolted right up to the T-176 Transmission . Life would have been great, but the trans was in very poor condition. Turns out it got water in it while sitting and pitted some of the gears. I need to replace the transmission, but my son is dead set on an automatic transmission. Can any of you tell me what would be the best and most cost effective swap. I need to go from the Ford 302 to the Dana 300 Transfer Case . Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Look on Novaks website. I'm sure someone here has done or knows someone who has, but chances are you'll need an adapter so you'll be at Novak sooner or later.

Bear in mind, that a direct bolt up Ford A/T will need an adapter kit to bolt to the Dana 300 . You will also need to replace the flywheel with the correct flex plate. And possibly replace the starter. Oh, and make certain that the flex plate has the correct balance for the engine.

Possible Ford automatics:

C4 Transmission would be a good three speed. No need for the C6 behind the 3.2/5.0L unless you've built it to the hilt.

AOD transmission if you are wanting an Overdrive four speed. IIRC, Advance Adapters makes a kit for this transmission.

The tf 999 was the Transmission that came with most 6 cylinder CJs. It's a chrysler tranny.

Note also, that going from the T-176 to either a C4 or AOD, will necessitate lengthening the front and shortening the rear driveshafts. A positive is that with the CJ7 you have more 'room' in the rear driveline than you would have with a CJ5 . Which is why I don't have an AOD behind my Ford 5.0L in my 76 CJ5.

Thank you guys for all of the good info. I am thinking the AOD might be my best option for now. I don't have a lot of experience with automatic Transmission and especially not Ford transmissions so again thanks for the info. I'll try to let you know how it works out.

3. Ford AOD | Tech Vault | Advance Adapters

Unfortunately, it looks like neither Novak nor AA, make an adapter for the AOD to Dana 300 . You might want to contact AA, because I'm certain I saw at one time, they had an adapter for an AOD-Dana300.

AA does make one for the Ford C4-Dana300:

It did not pull up on their site when using the drop down tool, but I found this one with a little searching. It is for the C6, but it says it works with the AOD 4WD also.

Thought it was the 727?

What I do know is a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with a 4.0 HO head will drop right in.

Without looking it up I believe the 999 took the 727s place around 1980.

The TF999 was used in CJs starting in 1980. But I don't know if it can be adapted to the Ford engine.

The 727 was never used in CJs, but I think it was used in FSJs

Caveman/Slomo,

Just to clear up the confusion. The T-176 did not come out of my 81. I had pulled it from a donor about a year before I started the 302 swap and I am not sure what year model that one was. About the only thing useful was the Transmission and we scrapped the rest.
