Vehicle(s)
Late 86 CJ7 Stock with a Dana 44.
YJ tub.
Still building it.
Does anyone know if there is a resource out there that will give a detailed VIN check without charging more money than need be for it?

I only want to check one VIN out of curiosity for the rebuild but spending any amount that does not directly benefit the CJ seems to be a waste of money (I'll even forgo coffee to see this built right).

Thanks for any ideas,

Are you asking about a car fax for a CJ? I do not believe they they go back that far.
Also - I know that it would never show the two times I rolled my 5.
Don't believe what you read... Especially on a classic Jeep!

Chances are good that if you post up your vin, someone here will be able to help you with what you are looking for.

See that's what I was wondering.
They have the "test" run and they tell you they found records and you should purchase it but I'm betting they say that to everyone.

I agree with CJ, carFax hasn't been around that long and you are only going to see what's been covered by insurance, so any home repairs will not show.
For example it wouldn't show any of the frame repairs or axle/motor swaps I've done myself.
Your own eyes are the best bet to checking out an old cj.

Well I'll take a shot at it.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Oh, I understand all that I was just interested in it for the historical perspective.

I'm supposed to be only the 3rd owner and I'd just like to know a bit about the history of the old girl as we do repairs.
When it was bought, sold, etc.

It's a late 86 CJ so I'm hoping some records exist about it.

I didn't fully understand what you were looking for, my bad. The vin will only tell all the above, not ownerships, accidents ect. Hope the above helps a little.

Just came to me. Maybe your local DMV might be able to help with at least the first registered date, and maybe transfer dates as well, but in todays day and age that may not happen. Just a thought.

Don't believe and trust everything in CarFax. I was looking at one that was clean on CarFax but inside the car I found a Hertz retal car accident kit and the name on the Hertz paperwork was the owner listed in the CarFax report.

Humm i'll pass on a rental car. . . .

work in a bodyshop

i warn you now carfax is total bull:dung:

listen in there commercials
"see all accidents reported to carfax"

its a scam always has been just to take a suckers money i cant tell how many used cars ive seen come across our lot with some sevear structural damage that had a "clean" carfax report youd be better off just crawling under it and have a look for your self:mad:

Carfax only goes back to 81.

As for vehicle history. I know the state of Ohio has a site that you can plug in a vin and get info. Perhaps Michigan has something similar.

It's an 86 CJ so I figure I'd find something of interest.
I did find Michigan's VIN check page.
SOS - Title Histories

Thanks for the idea. Sadly you have to mail it in and pay for it, but It's still nice to see something like this is around.

I also found a site that allows you to see if a vehicle has been reported stolen.

That sucks, in Ohio you just go to a website and plug in your vin and get your "report".

Carfax is awful. I've had major accidents in vehicles that I owned, that were reported to police AND insurance, and yet carfax shows all green check marks.

And as someone above said, if someone's had a Jeep for years and rolled it over but fixed it themselves, there's now way for ANY reporting system to have that information.

Only thing you can do is crawl underneath it and go over it with a fine-toothed comb.

Good news there.
It was in pieces when I bought it so I didn't have to crawl under anything.
The guy had started the project but then sadly failed to finish it.
I'm hoping I won't suffer the same fate.

I'm just trying to find a little something about its background like when it was bought, sold and how many owners.

Thanks,

Where abouts are you in Mi? My inlaws live in Toledo, and my ex-wife was from alittle north of Flint.

Just read a couple days ago that carfax is being sued. It's costing dealers of used cars $35 for a carfax. I got a car fax on a car I bought. all it said was four times the car was sold in Pascagoula Miss and could have been flooded.
