Hey guys, not sure if this has been addressed yet or not, but will jk model bumpers work on a cj? I'm curious because it appears all the bumpers I like are for the jk's. Anyone have any pics that they may have installed a jk bumper on a cj by chance?

IF you got a torch and welder any thing will fit. But to be a direct bolt on the answer is no. CJ frames are narrower the JK's and the rear bumpers mount differently.

Even adapting a wrangler YJ bumper takes some modifying. Smittybilt makes an adapter for some of their front bumpers to fit on Jeeps.

Well I guess that answers my question. New question is I read on some of the forums about a guy that builds bumpers, I think I saw his email was "groundpounder" I maybe wrong. But has anyone ordered his bumpers and if so is he still taking orders/ in business?

I'm pretty sure he is still in business, you can find him on jeepfourms under the screen name BESRK, his co. name is groundpounder fab.
I personally do not know anything about him.

4wd.com has adapters for YJ/TJ bumpers for 74-86 cj applications. cost is $49.99

Those are only for front bumpers that Smittybilt makes.

Yep, that would be why I will be building my own. Rod

Is there blueprints for building your own? I can measure twice and cut once usually but wouldn't enjoy having to redo a bumper.

BESRK just made me a bumper/tire carrier for my CJ5 at a much better price than the name brands. The quality was second to none. He even managed to custom build the mounting points, as the PO had removed the rear crossmember and replaced it with a custom piece welded between the frame. I highly recommend reaching out to him. Not too sure if he makes front bumpers but it's worth asking.

Blue prints? Did they have that back in the 70's? I don't remember ever seeing any. Besides you dont need no stinking blue prints! :bang:

Actually I have a pair of push bumpers from an old police car that I will attach to a heavier piece of metal that what the front bumper is made of, add som pipe in between, and use my pipe bender to make a couple of hoops for the side. Thems the plans anyway. Rod :D

I believe so....the first blueprint dates back to I think 1842. I would assume someone recorded their handy work and would love to share with novices such as myself. The 70's consisted of people who would hide prints and knowledge in fear of a younger man or woman taking their job. Well, thats what I've been told anyways by my elders. :D. Anyways, I didn't know and it never hurts to ask right lol. Goodluck in your fabrications and post up some pictures guys like me can drool over them.

Well I guess I'll start working up the plans then reach out to him. I just wasn't a simple looking rear bumper with a 2" rear hitch and shackle mounts. But I also want rectangular tubes that will fit inside the frame for bolting the bumper on. Sounds strange I know but the plan is to also have rack system that I can put thru those tubing and bolt in so as to be able to hold a lot more weight.

Remember a Jeep is a 1/4 ton light duty truck. How much weight are you thinking of hanging on your Jeep.

Honestly I made my front bumper with recovery points ans receiver. Eventually I will be making my rear bumper with a hitch and recovery points as well. The purpose of the reciever is for those carriers that can take 500 lbs. Front and rear carriers stabilized using the recovery points. Why? My Jeep isn't for rock crawling or hard core 4 wheeling with a group. It's for hunting and camping. Being a fairly successful predator hunter it wouldn't be uncommon to have 5 or 6 coyotes strapped on ...... modern sensibilities require a tarp or cover over the dead animals and these carriers are great for that. I hate cleaning blood from the inside of a vehicle. Also in the desert SW we need to carry coolers occasionally BIG coolers. These racks are great for that. ...... the point is weight can become a consideration quicker than expected.

Yeah my needs are about the same as hedgehogs. I will do some off roading but my jeep isn't built to do any real hard core stuff. Mostly going trails like bussa does. And a lot of hunting most predator and hog. The plan is to build a stout front and rear bumper. The rear needs to have a tow receiver and two bolt on plates on each end to hold the frame work of the rack I plan on building that will go over the jeep and tie into the front and rear bumper. :chug:

Are you catching your hogs live like they do on those hog catching shows like American Hoggers? Those guys must have modified tow hitches because they are always strapping live hogs on the front and trapping them between the tow hitch and bumper. I feel sorta sorry for the hogs, sometimes it's mighty hot up front.

Sounds like your making a cage. For mine the recovery points will act as places to bolt on additional items like stabilizers for a boat rack to carry a canoe on top. The receivers for the weight, recovery points for stabilizers. A canoe rocking sideways on top would drive me nuts. A bumper like you are thinking of wouldn't be difficult to make. If you were closer I'd say come on over, bring some steel and we'll find your bumper in there some where. This thread is making me excited to start on mine. But I can't, I need to make the Jeep road worthy first.
