1980 cj5, stock 304,t176,dana 300. 1984 cj7, 258, t-5,dana 300, 4 inch lift w/33's. Soon to have a 401, t-176, dana 300
Im getting ready to lower my new 401 down in place of the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l that was in my 84 CJ7 and I notice that the the 401 has what Im guessing is a return line comming from the fuel filter and back to the tank. My jeep just has the one fuel line that ran to the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l that I can tell what do I do with this line. Might I not be seeing a return line that should be with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l set up? I noticed on my 80 cj with the AMC 304 that it also has the return line.....Thanks for any help.

On a carbed engine, you do not need a return line. Plumb it and run it! Happy to see another401 CJ!

Ok sounds good and will do. One more question though,, why does my 80 cj with the AMC 304 and the 2 barrel have this arrangement with the return line going back to the tank?

Ok thank you much,,, hopefully will have the engine sitting down on the mounts tommorrow

I'm not positive but is your carb a 4bbl. and if so i would belief that this may be an overflow. On my 75 350 4bbl it also has a return line back to the tank. I belief this is for extra fuel that is not being used as you cruise down the road but when you kick in the 4bbl this extra fuel is needed as the overflow is needed to supply the extra jets and secondaries. I know that emissions where starting to raise there ugly heads and fuel saving after the gas shortages of the 70's hit. So not sure just a thought.
