fuel problem 232/I6

im not getting fuel from the tank??? new fuel filter gaslines and fuel pump it ran good then now it wont start run with gas poured into the carb (AMC 232 i6 I6) i messed with it and got it to run buy blowing air into the tank it seem to get the gas to flow but then it stalled after 15-20 min running it was at idle and stalled and nothing??? im stumped should i drop the tank to start there or go for an electric fuel pump??? how whould that work with the old fuel pump....im stumped

I had the same issues. I replaced all you have and still. If you have a fuel filter with a return make sure the return is on top(small outlet). I added an electronic pump but only use it on start up then the mechanical pump does the rest. This has worked for me. I have an Edelbrock carb and still had trouble at higher speeds so I replaced the fuel filter with the return and this cured my problems. Good luck.

i dont have the fuel filter with the return its pretty basic as for fuel filters go...in side and out flow side...im going to get a electric pump what psi flow did you go with i looked into a few from the local parts store an they vary in price from $52 bucks (with a 6-8 psi) or over $120 plus for the better units that pump 100psi ??? i was told to get one around 8-10 psi and that would work fine ??? and how did you mount your electric fuel pump does it go between the old fuel pump and tank or between the old fuel pump and fuel filter whats best and from whats said your macanical pump is still used??? one last thing electric pumps whats the best was to wire them in???

i had the same problem on my 78 with the AMC 232 i6 . brand new fuel pump crapped out on me.

the more i read the more i think its just a bad NEW fuel pump those seem to be hit or miss im ripin it off and taking it back for a new one asap!!! as soon as i changed the fuel pump before it worked great and started and ran fine, is there something that makes the fuel pump go bad so soon or is it just a bad part that goes...what is the correct way to swap my macanical fuel pump for an electric fuel pump???

i bought a new one when i first brought my jeep home. it seems there are two fuel pumps available and my original one was suspect. i bought the first new one from quadtratec. it died in two maybe three months, called them up and three days later a new one from the manufacturor was on my porch. no problems since.

make sure you do not have any vaccum leaks in the system. that could also cause a headache.

i had to change all my hoses. my jeep had sat unused for almost ten years before i bought it. so all the hoses where pretty much and it has improved since.

ok hears a good one so the small hose that come from the distrubitor that goes to the carb what does that do i think i read something about this but it was kinda over my head at the time since that was a HOSE that i messed with as i went through the tune up and it was on an off at times as i messed with the distributor,cap,wires to then the fuel problem...what does the hose that goes from the distrubitor to the carb do does that have anything to do with vacuum/carb/fuel problems???

When I was having my fuel issues the first thing I replaced was the fuel pump. That didn't fix it but once I got the jeep going it went bad within weeks. I put the old fuel pump back in and all was fine. I put in the electric pump as a security measure. I installed the electric pump in a metal box and bolted it next to the gas tank. It works great having both. As I have said before I only use the electric pump when starting the jeep by turning it on for about 5 to 10 seconds before cranking it over.

to have the electric pump is a good idea im going to put that on the list of things to add... i would really like to get the macanical pump working im taking the new fuel pump back for an exchange i would try the old pump but it seems to have no pressure at all so i junked it...looks like thursday morning will be my day to get some time to work on it and i'll go from there,thanks again for all the info atriot:

fuel pump was bad (in less than a month on the previous new pump) i put it on thursday let the silicone set overnight. Today i primed the lines, fuel filter, and carb with a splash of gas and bam its alive i love my jeep. i even got to beat on it alittle with no problems and all i can say is i love my jeep !!! on to the next thing...like a good power washin
