So, I have a 1984 CJ with a 1995 YJ body. Turns out I have the poly, 21gal fuel tank. It's not a rectangle and can't simply be flipped to satisfy the YJ filler neck hole. I was considering just buying a new YJ tank, since I need a new skid plate anyway. However, I know YJ's came with integral, electric fuel pumps - not engine-mounted mechanical ones. If I were to buy all new YJ equipment: Tank, Skid Plate, Sending Unit/Pump, Clamp; would there be a problem with having the 2 inline fuel pumps? Or, would I just bypass (or remove) the mechanical one altogether?

Second; my Jeep's been sitting all winter and has undergone a sever makeover. I'm trying to get her started, but she just won't. I'm worried I have spark issues AND fuel issues - but I'm good with diagnosing the spark. I haven't, however, had the pleasure of working with mechanical fuel pumps before. :bang: I was wondering if there was a special way to prime it.

Since I obviously don't have a tank, my plan was to run a gravity-fed bottle to the pump from under the hood and see if it'll fire up. If I can get it started, it'll be a HUGE stress-relief!

Any info would be great! Street cleaning starts friday and I don't want to have to push the car to the other curb every week!

Thank you!

...before I get the replies I'd like to say: I like the YJ fitment of the fuel filler neck. I'm not going to cut a new hole on the right and patch the left side. It's a feature I've liked for a while and I'm going to do what it takes to keep it. Thanks!

You beat me to it. I was about to say if painting is in your jeep's future, just cut a new hole and fill the old one with some sheet metal and bondo. That's a lot cheaper than replacing the tank.

You don't need to prime or gravity feed your fuel pump. They suck pretty good. Just put a gas can on the ground and run a hose from the mechanical pump inlet to it and it'll only take a little cranking the engine to fill your carb.

BTW, that's a pretty nice gas tank you've got there. It shouldn't be to hard to find a CJ buyer for it.

So I've been working on the 'eep for a couple hours now... I hooked up the temp. tank to the pump and all the gas just dumped out the return line (behind the car). So I bypassed the filter for now and the car is DEFINITELY getting gas now. Which brings me to the more troublesome part of this problem: electrics. I have NO IDEA what the PO did to this thing. But, it doesn't look pretty. I've been avoiding the engine harness like the plague, but it looks like I'm going to have to do some more research to see if everything's hooked up right.

Since I just need it to run, I don't need to worry about oil pressure sensors or other things like that. I'm wondering if anyone has a good resource with the "minimum system requirements" to get this thing running.

First things first... I need to go get a spark tester and a spark plug socket...

UGH! :bang:
