Anyone here have a CJ on full width 44's? I have a set of axles that I got for a real good price $0 and was planning on building them up for my 84 CJ7 . I am plannng on mocking up the axle width to see if I like the extra width look or not, but thought I woud start here.
I am keeping it street legal, but will push the legal part as far as I can. I know California has a bad rap, and most of it is true, but we seem to be able to get away with somethings in different parts of the state. The axles came off a 69 ford and need some cleanup work, but I am looking seriously as using them.
Bumpside era ('68-'72) Fords came with closed knuckle front axles. Not the most desirable, but for the price, they will work! I had started installing a Dana 44 /D-60 set off a '72 in a Scout 2 project just before we moved to OK. I wonder if the guy that ended up with it ever finished it?
hey Cweed did you run a shackle reversal did you like it what out boarding brackets did you use I am getting ready to make some but would rather buy them if I can find a set I like.
The axles may be free but may not be any stronger that what you have. The closed-knuckle front is an issue and they had small Dana 30 sized u-joints and a crappy turning radius. The rear , if a Dana 44 , may well be a 19-spline 2-piece axle design similar to the AMC20 . I admit that I am not familiar with Ford's time line on axles.
Many older axles (say from the early '70s back) are not nearly as strong as their newer versions due to u-joint size, spline count, etc. This includes some big-names like the D60 & D70.
The jeep in my avatar has a "full-width" Dodge D60 front that is 67" wms-wms plus 15.5" wide tires.
