Misc Gas tank cj7

I have a 1983 CJ7 Renegade and it has a disfigured rectangular gas tank skid plate/box which a poly tank fits into. The skid box is in rough shape and I want to replace it. The tank skids available do not resemble mine so I am not sure what to do. I could purchase a new tank and hopefully the available skid plates will work with it. While looking at the tanks, I see that filler is on the passenger side as well as the sending unit whereas the new tanks have the sending unit on the drivers side. Does anyone have some thoughts or direction that I should follow? Thank you very much.

How bad is your tank box? They can be repaired/bent back to shape when disfigured. Ask me how I know
My guess is that aftermarket stuff will not fit as well. Maybe someone else has another idea though.

Hate to say this but since you have a poly tank that is far from factory.
They are not bad at all but require things.
Poly larger tanks limit ground clearance and removal of the skid plate.
If you're not doing off-road that needs a skid plate you are probably ok.
Can you supply pictures?

CJ. Later CJs indeed had plastic tanks from the factory. Somewhere around ‘82 they showed up.

Didn't know that later CJs may have poly tanks...

Thanks for the reply, here are pictures showing the tank and the "box". I believe the tank is okay as I pumped out 8 gallons of stale fuel. Bought this at an auction 14 months ago although I drove past it for 3 or so years seeing it sit in back of the house, unrideable. One option, although it will take work, is to clean up the box and add metal to where it is needed. I had hoped to get a new box to go with the new frame. As for the riding, I do not plan on much off-roading but you never know. Any more thoughts to be had? Thank you.

Yes my 84 came plastic. 15 gallon. Think I’m on my 2nd metal. First was a 22 gallon metal tank. To big. I really like the 15 gallons I bought from Holley. Sure they don’t make it but good quality and was a reasonable price. The plastic also warp with age.
