i just got off phone with a member here
he switched to the points distributor and now trying to get it to start
he is tracing wires to make sure they are all in the right spot
( but i think its 2 or 3 problems )
when he turns the switch he hears a sound thats in between a whine and a roar but no turning of the crank
first I told him to take out the starter ( but leave it connected) and turn the key ( to see if the starter will spin )
then i posted new images to my gallery of my selenoid to show the wiring

now on to the dizzy
what wiring is needed ( if any ) for a points ign?
and of course any suggestions at all would be helpful even if its " put the OEM back on

Why do you want to put the points distributor? They switched from points in 75 for a reason. They are hotter are don't need much maintenance. Can't get wet.

Check out an HEI. Real quick starts. I won't go back. :)

i cannot disagree with that
but he wanted to go with points and thats where we are at right now
he may change his mind maybe
but as i said I think the starting issue is the starter
after that the wiring

You don't get much simpler than points. The points will ground out 8 times as the distributor rotates (if we are talking about a V8). This is fed to the minus terminal of the coil. That's it besides the wires to the plugs and coil.

The wire goes to the coil. Dwell needs to be set first and then set the timing. Wouldn't hurt to check the condenser for a short too.

OEM ignition uses a different module then the Prestolite. What vehicle is this in, details? What all was replaced?

86 cj AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l
but he says he is questioning the year
10th digit of VIN right?

replaced?
I will get that info

Yep. OEM for anything above '77 is the molded ICM we are all used to seeing on the driver side fender. Prior to '77, the prestolite ICM is a smaller metal box...I think I have two of them lying around...

Has your friend considered leaving the stock ignition alone and just upgrading it?
This really is a step backwards going to the Prestolite.

I have an OEM distributor I'll send him. I went with a DUI and can't believe the difference. PM me

I have not asked why
but rather tried to tackle the starting issue with the wiring and possible bad starter
that may be a topic of conversation later
i will be showing him this thread so he can get the pros and cons

I was told that the Presidential Limo uses points dizzy because it's not susceptible to certain kinds of electrical bombs:confused:
