new to cj and new to this site, nice place very helpful already.what i need to know from all you cj masters is where is a good place to mount some tow hooks on the front of a 78 CJ7 .for now it has the stock bumper and would just like to have a place for a tug every once and awhile.the plan for this one is to leave it alone for a bit and play in the mud, then tare it down and make it a sunday cruzer.i picked this up for 500.00 and a old fourwheeler so its not the best thing you have ever seen but has promise of making a nice toy.

Hello mtnman514, welcome to the site and thanks for the compliment! :chug:

I just drilled out the frame rails and bolted it to the top. Nothing fancy for me.

sounds like an excuse for fabing up a new bumper with places to bolt on a few shackles to me

this is the way I would see it too. those big 3/4 inch shackles on a welded on eye.
Like the ones on a Hummer. This is the only thing I really like on a Hummer.

jeep does stand for Just Empty Every Pocket lol.

I have a steel channel bumper similar to stock with a brush guard welded to it. It has the hooks turned sideways and bolted on first and then welded.

I like shackles for a point of attachment. (same as clevis as shown here,) they are to helpful to carry several with you. they have so many uses in recovery. I carry about 4 in my trail jeep, 2 in both of the others, they are superior as a place to attach to, can be used to join straps and chains, used with different recovery tools such as a block.
Hooks are ok but setting up for shackles is better.

just put them on with those industrial zip ties take your wife out in the woods on a trail ride have a buddy with you get stuck on purpose then
you can say see babe i really need to build a bumper with some hooks on it

I would NOT trust pulling sideways on a hook, it's not made to be pulled on like that.

I dont think he meant its turned sideways...its probably rotated sideways so the hook is horizontal and parallel to the ground. It can be used like that but I'd worry about the strap falling off all the time.
