first jeep,78 cj7 on a 84 frame.258 with a 4 speed.not pretty just a toy.
new to cj and new to this site, nice place very helpful already.what i need to know from all you cj masters is where is a good place to mount some tow hooks on the front of a 78 CJ7 .for now it has the stock bumper and would just like to have a place for a tug every once and awhile.the plan for this one is to leave it alone for a bit and play in the mud, then tare it down and make it a sunday cruzer.i picked this up for 500.00 and a old fourwheeler so its not the best thing you have ever seen but has promise of making a nice toy.

Hello mtnman514, welcome to the site and thanks for the compliment! :chug:

I just drilled out the frame rails and bolted it to the top. Nothing fancy for me.

sounds like an excuse for fabing up a new bumper with places to bolt on a few shackles to me

this is the way I would see it too. those big 3/4 inch shackles on a welded on eye.
Like the ones on a Hummer. This is the only thing I really like on a Hummer.

To make sure we're on the same page, are you talking about hooks?

Or a clevis?

Because that's really going to change my advice. If it's just hooks, CJ has the right idea, just drill some holes in the top of the frame rail in use some grade 8 bolts and hook-em up. If you want clevis mounts, that's when you need to start thinking about a new bumper.

Those are what I assumed was meant by 'tow hooks.' Also, if you add a spring loaded catch to them - your strap will usually not jump out of the hook.

oh man,i can already see this place is gonna get me in trouble!every time i get a new toy i go nutty on the mods and the cash.with this one i told the wife i would leave it alone for a while then start messin with it,she should of known!!!!anyway thanks for the response everyone, its the hooks i was talking about not the clevis, umm for now!

jeep does stand for Just Empty Every Pocket lol.

I have a steel channel bumper similar to stock with a brush guard welded to it. It has the hooks turned sideways and bolted on first and then welded.

I like shackles for a point of attachment. (same as clevis as shown here,) they are to helpful to carry several with you. they have so many uses in recovery. I carry about 4 in my trail jeep, 2 in both of the others, they are superior as a place to attach to, can be used to join straps and chains, used with different recovery tools such as a block.
Hooks are ok but setting up for shackles is better.

just put them on with those industrial zip ties take your wife out in the woods on a trail ride have a buddy with you get stuck on purpose then
you can say see babe i really need to build a bumper with some hooks on it

Go for the chrome hooks if the plan is for a "tar baby".

If you wheel it much you will eventually replace them with clevises. I've seen a lot of hooks torn off the frame in a hard pull. Take 1/2" plate on the side of the frame rail a come straight through the bumper and drill a 3/4" hole.

I would NOT trust pulling sideways on a hook, it's not made to be pulled on like that.

I dont think he meant its turned sideways...its probably rotated sideways so the hook is horizontal and parallel to the ground. It can be used like that but I'd worry about the strap falling off all the time.
