HEI vs MSD

HEI vs MSD
On the recommendation of JeepHammer in another forum (sorry CJ :o)
I replaced my MSD offroad (BTW that one is sealed in epoxy (thats the only difference I am aware of against a 6AL box) and the MSD lifetime repair thing? it ain't no good with those...you've been warned) with a Summit Racing CDI box.

Read this
MSD ignition box problems - JeepForum.com
for a pretty in-depth troubleshooting and repair/replace guide I went thru with him when my MSD Off-road box failed me.

Wow, that was a good read. That guy actually used to work for MSD? And now he's pushing the Summit knock-off?

I did a side by side comparission of the Summit 850602 and the MSD 6A, the Summit actually seams closer to the Mallory digitial controller than the 6A. And it's only $140? How do you like yours so far?

So, I'll need;

1x MSD Ignition 8862 - MSD Replacement Cables-Overview – SummitRacing.com (if I want to move the control module inside the cab which was highly recommended)

2x MSD Ignition 8869 - MSD Wire Adapters-Overview – SummitRacing.com (or do I only need one?)

1x Mallory 29069 - Mallory Shock/Vibration Mount Kits-Overview – SummitRacing.com (this just looks like a good idea)

What kind of coil are you running?

I run a MSD Blaster II E-coil (same style used on the '88 F350 I robbed 1/2 the parts for this off of! :)) just because I got it on clearance at my FLAPS.

Mine seems to work as well/maybe better than the Off-road box. So I can say I'm happy with the ignition side of the engine. Still need to tune the dizzy and adjust the fuel flows on the carb, but I tell you what, this thing will scream even right now!
I doubt I will ever use a stock ignition system in a CJ or hot rod again.
Oh I mounted mine up under the dash, right behind the battery mount to try and keep it dry. I took out the heater so there is plenty of room
If you get the one with the rev limiter, thats not a real good place, as its a pain to try and adjust it!
The 8869 you only need one! it plugs into the distributor on one side and the extension wire on the other. I had already replaced my dizzy with one off a late '80s grand wagoneer for the electronic ignition system (direct bolt-in and cheap! I recommend this also!) If you are still running points you won't need the adapter, as the points pickup is a single, separate wire off the box.

My plan is to replace the 4 pin GM module with a Summit box when the funds allow it because I don't care for the lag you get when the motor is at operating temp that you get with the module.( unless someone has a Summit CDI box sitting in their garage that is not needed for cheap) :D. Also haven't I seen Junkyarddog (Teamrush,Jeephammer) on this site before?.

I've been looking at a new dizzy as well. I'm thinking about going with a Proform HEI #67185 for about $190 shipped. It appears to be a good one with advanced curves (gotta luv those).
StreetSideAuto has them for $209., but there's a 10% off code of "ssawinner09", for joining their email and free shipping.

Yep he shows up over here at times also...

If you have lag it's not the module. Mine has crisp throttle response.
Unless the module is getting to hot, maybe.

BTW, with the ford parts and the GM module it'll make a spark that will knock you on your azz, just ask my buddy, LOL.
Hey man hold this..........
