H.E.I question.
i have an 85 cj i am installing a holly sniper bbd. i want to get a Hei, but there are many options in many price ranges. the truth is i am a tired of spending money and dont want to over spend if i dont need to. jeep will just be road driven. i know there are snobs out there, but is a 500 dollar one ready better than a 160 dollar on? I dont want to over pay because someone spend a few xtra cents and put their name on it -making it worth hundreds more!!
here are a few. I just want to get something that will fit and last and work! I understand i need to be careful of the gears.
please help. but i know it will be hard so many opinions.
i am not a gear head make it simple

thanks for any help

This is a long running huge debate. About the best is DUI (Davis Unified) but very expensive. With you having the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l the distributor gear is not an issue.
Is this your only transportation? I know several people that bought two cheaper ones and keep one in the tool box as a spare.
Here is an older debate.

I just went from all MSD ( distributor / CD box 6AL and coil ) to a HEI / DUI and so far I like it.

I was in the same boat a few years ago. Seemed like $400 was crazy, so I did a bit of looking.
Went with an HEI distributor from Summit. Has not skipped a beat in 3 years now. Quality is great and half the price.

Yeah I was looking at those. Even gave it some serious consideration. Still was cheaper than the MSD items.

cool i will at this one. i feel like i have spent a million dollars already and i still need to get ac unit and steering box and more

It’s just thousands, not a million. I think mine was $9,200 or $9,500 plus tax license and some insurance policy they made me buy since I was young and no co-signer so around $10,800 out the door 41 years ago. In the last 6 - 8 years working on the drive train and front end improvements I’ve dumped at least another $20K at least into it. Still pretty cheap entertainment I think. :chug:

I bought a HEI off of Temu and I have not had any problems for a year now and it was under a 100 bucks. I was spectacle at first myself but so far so good and I do a lot of off roading / rock crawling in my CJ7 1982

I went with the Holley Hyperspark and like the setup. Looks better than that huge head on the HEI and integrates perfectly with the Sniper computer controls.
Lots of the HEI's on the market are junk, DUI is the highest rated

On the Holley Sniper BBD make sure you increase the return line to gas tank to something bigger than a 1/4 inch if not it will flood. in increased mine to a 3/8 inch but 5/16 inch will work

I ran a new 3/8 return line -- but i didnt go into one of the 5/16 ports and i added a tap in the top but of course put in the wrong place where it now hits the cross member. so i have to drop the tank 3 inch over and it would have been fine but now the body is on so a hard job now.
