i have a 1976 CJ7 w/AMC 304 automatic with no owners manual i can not figure out how to tell or even tell if it is in 4 wheel drive the level is pulled all the way back but it bucks hard when i put it drive or reverse any help with be helpful

If its buckign when you step on the gas your more then likely in 4 lo.. try to ease into it. If its bucking when you slowly let your foot of the gas then you may have other issues. Im pretty sure on both the Dana 300 and Dana 20 all the way back it 4 lo. The other ways you can see what is going on is to disco you front and reat drive shaftsd from the T/C, put it in in drive and see if both of the out puts are turning. If its bucking really bad unlock the front hubs and try to drive it with just the rear engaged.. if its smoother that way you may have mis matched gearing in your axles..

A little bit more info like what Transmission and T/C you have would be helpful. Do you have locking hubs?? Im sure other sticklers for the forum rules will be by in a litle bit to tell you to fill out your profile.

For that year I would say you have a GM Turbo 400 with a QuadrTrac Transfer Case . But if that was the case you would not have a shift lever for the Transfer Case . You would have a rotary switch in the glove box like this:

If it is a QuadraTrac the output is on the passenger side. Is your rear differential centered or on the passenger side?

The QuadraTrac is a full time Transfer Case . It's always in 4WD and you would not have locking hubs on the front axle.

We need to know what drivetrain you have before we answer. A previous owner could have swapped out the Transfer Case .

As others have said we need to know what you have.
I would say all the way back is probably 4wd, usually it's N with 2wd next and than 4wd. With my Dana 300 high range is back or to you.

yes i have the switch in the glove box also have locking hubs on front axle
they are in the unlock position also out put is on passenger side

The switch in the glove box tells me you have a QuadraTrac Transfer Case . They are full time 4 wheel drive. But they never came from the factory with locking hubs. Lets hope someone put in a part time kit. Otherwise with the hubs unlocked you wouldn't be able to go very well unless the switch in the glove box is in "emergency drive".

You also have a TF400 Transmission since that was the only option with the QuadraTrac .

ok that is good to know thanks so what about the shifter on the floor
Don't touch that. That's for the ejection seat.

No, I'm confused. I think you used to have a QuadraTrac but it's obviously been modified. Take some pictures.
