holley 4160 no good for 360

Hey gang. New to the site and new to jeeps. I picked up a 78 CJ7 a couple months ago. I got the bug quick. I bought it with plans to flip it on account of it being so clean but the longer I've had it the more painful the thought of letting it go becomes. Here is my question. The cj has an amc 360 in it. I have a holley 4160 on it. It just doesn't seem to run right. I did some searching and have seen a couple people that said the 4160 just doesn't agree with the 360. At first I just thought it needed a renew/rebuild kit, but when I read about it I started to second guess myself. Does anyone have experience with this situation?

I would first list the size of the carburetor. That would help us determine if this carb is in fact no good for your engine. There are about a dozen different models of the Holley 4160. All the 4160 tells us is that it is a vacuum secondary square bore carburetor. They range in size from (IIRC) 390-750 cfm.

What exactly is it doing? Can you narrow it down to any particular condition, i.e. cold/warm engine, accelerating/decelerating, coughs, spits, sputters, flutters, sneezes back at you, etc. etc.

You'll find quite a few experienced carb guys here. I have built countless Holley carbs, ranging from street use vacuum secondaries to all out high performance race carbs.

What I'm getting at here is that you shouldn't automatically count the carb out, that it is just bad for the engine. I've seen so much time and money be wasted just because someone didn't have all the proper information to begin with (myself included).

You can find the carb part number on the choke horn right where you found the model number. Let us know what that is, and someone just might chime in to help, once you give us some more symptoms.
