How much is too much?

How do you spend 20k on a jeep? Is every one buying the top dollar and new parts? my project now will have no more then 5k tied up into it.

My next project I'm hoping to have less then 4k into it. I also do all my work myself. The next one will be stretched 10-12 inches, run a 360/727/300 combo and roll on locked 44's.

That's the beauty of it, It's all good.

At least for my investment, that makes it sound better, I know what I have. I have been through every inch of that thing myself at least twice!

I have had multiple Jeeps (mostly CJ7 's) and have made a profit on all of them. I brought many of them back from the dead and then sold them but all of them were able to pass emissions and all had happy buyers. I am now building one that I truly plan to keep and expect it will still be at a cost where I could get what I have into it back if I ever decided to. My method, lots of used parts off CL and other folks working on their rigs and very few high priced items from the vendors.

First I would like to apologize for my blissfull ignorance about the cost of my jeep build. After thinking about how you could drop 14k into a CJ and not be finished I made a Quick spread sheet to see how far in the whole I am with it. As of today I'm 2k in the whole for all the parts listed in my sig. Then I added a colum for new costs to reflect what each part would have run if I grabbed it new. WOW.. Just a tad under 9k. Thats not including the cost of the hydro assist parts. I also do all my work myself so that 9k doesn't include labor for any of it. I really try to buy as many parts of fellow jeepers as possible to help them out financially and get the parts cheaper on my end.

Yes if you are patient enough many good parts can come from CL or elsewere, I bought a new Warn axle kit, my wheels and my seats off CL for good prices but I'm not going to shop for used ball ends or wheels bearings etc.

I bought my 86 for $3500 now it had a good motor and Transmission and Transfer Case and a 10000 lb winch, but everything else needed work. I've up graded the axles, diff and gearing. 4" lift kit, Rebuildt the brakes and new everything for the e-brakes. Those are very important as I found out. But thats a differant story. The last thing I've put on is new tires and have well over $8500 that including purchase price in my jeep and it still needs to be painted, but if I do that I'll be to scared to take it in the woods and on the trails. Just enjoy the process of rebuilding it and take it one step at a time I've had mine for 5 years now and just got everything important to me done. All the dash lights, switches,gauges work. Jeep can stand for just empty enother pocket but My saying is just enough exsentcle parts. Most important thing is to have fun!!!! And your doing the right thing to get everything road ready first.

Inalso don't skimp when I comes to important steering parts and so on. I'm sure before mines on the road I will drop a other 2-3 grand into making sure the front is fixed right.. PO welded up some shady high steer knuckles and booty fabled the steering rods out of tsc tractor ends.. 1-1/4" pipe and 1/2 bolt for the high steer. I'm gonna redo it all with the proper 3/4" heim joints.
