I'm at a bit of a stand still on my project due to the fact that, at this point, I need to get the body off. But once I do, the only place I have to put it is on the other side of the garage, which means no more parking access!

So, I'm going to start calling around to get estimates on having the body media blasted down to bare steel. Before I do though, I'm hoping that (1) someone here might be able to recommend someone in the Austin area for this work, and/or (2) y'all could give me an idea of how much it should run me to have the tub blasted...

THEN, I'm trying to decide whether to try to paint it myself, or just bite the bullet and let a pro do it. I've never painted before, and my compressor is pretty anemic. Accordingly, I think I'm leaning toward having a pro do it.

Thanks for any advice! :chug:

even though i live 30 miles from austin, i try to stay away from it. i've got a friend that does some body work, and painting that im gonna have him do my frame, and body. buuuuuuut

i'm gonna take the frame over stripped by me, then have him prime and seal it. and the tub, i'm gonna strip the inside, take to my father in law and have the inside rhino lined,or line-x something like that, then after that, take over to my friends and have him paint the outside as well as the roll cage and tub, hood, and fenders, but i'm gonna stripped and have it ready when he gets it.

for whatever reason, apollo paint and body keeps rolling around in my head, but i don't know if they'll do a some job like that, so i'm wondering if a small private type business would do it. if so, (if you can't find anybody in austin) i've got a few connections as to having it painted, and can ask about it being blasted. just give me a heads up.

The local shop here (salem,or.) uses walnut shells and it does a great job.
If you take it in disassembeled completely my vehicles I have had done was about $500.00 average. This included 1966 f100,1969 CJ5 ,1970 VW Bug.The jeep was tub,fenders,hood,tailgate,w/s frame, grill,BOTH sides.I hope that gives you a feel for what to expect. The frame was sand blasted
for $100.00 (striped bare frame). To me that is money well spent in time savings and the quality of final job.

Wow - that's absolutely worth it and not nearly as much as I had feared... Wish I didn't have a big dent that needed repair, too, but at least I know what to expect for the blasting portion. Hopefully I can find someone at that rate down here.

Thanks! :chug:

I got a quote for $900 to sandblast everything and put it in primer.

Based on the feed back here, sandblasting alone should run around $600. So, does an additional $300 for primer seem about right? Honestly, it's less than I was expecting. :D

Take it over ther quick before they change their mind!

After doing this myself a few weeks back, thats a steal!:chug:

Make sure they are using a good metal etching primer.

Agreed.

After doing this myself, I had $250 in material and 12 hours of my life that I both wouldn't trade and will never get back at the same time. I now know my frame better than anyone else, and I missed dinner two nights in a row.:(

I consider myself to still be young, but my time is pretty expensive. Have you left yet?:chug:

So your saying that you are going to have the body sheet metal
sand blasted . Is that the actual media they will use (sand) or walnut shell or plastic or soda ? I did that about 30 years ago and the bodyman was not the least bit amused. The sandblasting company was glad to take my money and could have cared less about the outcome Sandblasting sparingly on body metal to remove light surface rust is ok.:( mike

I think he is saying he is having it media blasted which is different than sand blasting. This has come a long way since you had it done 30 years ago.

Well he said "sandblasted" so ya I guess so.I am quit familiar with media blasting as I have had four vehicles stripped to bare metal with walnut shell media. It leaves a smooth clean surface ready for primer with little prep time.Sanblasting leaves a very rough surface that is dirty and require a lot of prep.It will also warp metal panels. Actually the sandblasting episode I referred to was over 40 years ago and I think I have learned a little bit since then. Mike

Your preaching to the choir friend. Anyone that's been involved with classic car restoration knows the different methods that can be used
and the pros and cons. mike
