I purchased a CJ5 and it has no identification plate on the body. How can I tell how old it is?

A few pictures would be a great starting point. You can take a look at my 1960 CJ5 to give you some ideas.

There is a VIN number on the frame. Also general info, what kind of motor, rear axles, how many levers (two or three) and as posted, PICS, Pics, pics.

rocmoc n AZ/Mexico

Where on the frame can I look for identification?

The first digit is a "J", the next should be the last digit of the year.

1972-1975. The frame rails are 29" outside to outside both front and back. Wheel base is 84". Before 1972 the wheel base was significantly shorter. I just went through this same, " wonder what year this thing really is" thing. You can also find the year of the engine from the numbers on the side, assuming the engine is original. Those are just a couple of the many indicators that I used to figure out mine. I never could find a vin on the frame. I'm sure it is there somewhere, I just couldn't ever find it.

the engine block number? passenger side near the second spark plug. that will tell the build date of the motor.
