1971 cj5 renegade 2 paint code 999 trim 340. Big bad orange, 225 odd fire, t86aa 3 speed,Dana 18 single stick, dana 44 off set rear, dana 27 off set front, 4.89, Koenig pto, koenig pto winch. Production date May 1971
Okay, when I was looking into buying this jeep I was not completely sure of its history. I knew when buying it that it has an orange paint job, no tail gate, the 225 Dauntless Buick 225 V6 , 1971 CJ5 . So with all of those facts I started my resurch on the jeep. I came to see that all CJ5 's from 71 with out tail gates were Renegade 2's. then reading on I see only 600 were made that year from the factory, I also read that some deal ships could have put stickers on some to help push them. Anyway moving on, I found my paint and trim code tag on passenger side. Says paint 999 trim 340. So looking at the paint code 999 that could be the sunset orange or the big bad orange. Sunset orange only AMC 150 were made. Big bad orange only 50 were made. Then the 340 from what I found is the Renegade trim package. Now all is matching up for me. The jeep as i know had spent its life in a pull barn used every so often on a farm, reading 36xxx miles. Jeep has a couple of rust spots on the drivers side floor pan a out 5x5 inch that has been patched pretty well. Outside of that no rust. So I'm asking that someone prove me wrong that it is not rare or that in fact it's a rare CJ5 .

I never heard of the "all Renegade 2's had no tailgate" thing. My reading had said they took the sport and performance items from the 1969 "462 Edition "'s and combined them into one package, then added some visual appeal to create the Renegade 1 and an estimated built number of less then 250.
For 71 they added a different stripe and the colors Baja Yellow and Big Bad Orange (also called Riverside Orange). And they also added Amer. Racing alloy wheels and H78-15 tires. They say about 600 were built, roughly 200 of each color. I guess records were sparse from that time frame.
But besides the Tuxedo Park Park, those early Renegades would be next in the "collectable" line. I think you would need to contact some of these authors that write the vintage Jeep books to get some solid intel on them. They've done the research.

This was the exact reason I wanted to see some pics of it when you posted in the introductions thread. If the codes are leading you to what you say youve got a nice collectible. What happened to the hood decals? PaRenegade is right , the Tuxedo Park Park is a bit more rare but not near as cool.

The jeep has been painted twice from what I can tell. Here inside the hood you can find the old decals. I have ordered my decals to install. Just have been getting the drivable again. So far, I have bleed all brakes after new rubber lines, all leafs, bushings and shackles replaced, new timing gear set, chain, dampers, oil pump, water pump, flushed all fluids out, timing cover, belt, painted motor, complete exhaust from headers to mufflers replaced, all hoses under hood, fuel pump and filters changed out in the month I have had it. Today was my first day to drive it to work!
So back to the decals here is a pic of the old ones that were left from last time it was painted. That's the one thing were I have not decided what I'm going to do. This is not my first ball game with the jeep. Sadly I can not part from them, there was always one on the farm growing up and mom had one for dd. I'm just looking for any opinion on what I have and how rare it is. I think I got a far deal on it as the older guy I bought it off was not sure of the sound it was making, it may be in the drive line he said. As it sat at idle making that noise lol.

Nice

What's cool is the research. So I wonder how many of the 200 survive today after the Valley of the salted road?

And :ww: from Minnesota

That model and color is my favorite of all CJ's. you have a nice collectable in great shape. This guy is jealous.

I got in touch with a guy that his vin on his Renegade 2 is only 23 older then mine made in the Month of may 1971. His is the very same as mine outside of the mag wheels. His were not located on sale. Very cool, it also came out of mo AMC 150 miles from where I got mine from. Thought I would share

wha happened tothe flares?

Took them off. Looked cheap to me. There is not enough offset to call for them. Trying to make it look as factory as I can. Her is on with them.

I took my fronts off because they were thrashed. I found they do help to cut down on road grime the front tires sling up. Question is were flares factory on the 71 renegades?

From pictures I have found it looks as they came with out them.
This weekend I went and replace my output shaft seals on my Transfer Case . No more leaks under the jeep now! Going to pop off my body this week and prep my frame for paint. Ordered a few parts for steering repair also. Bell crank repair kit, drag link, and steering damper kit. Then I can get my pto winch hooked up and going.

I saw that same pic and several with it too. dealer option?

Thought I would post some Renegade II info in this thread as I think others may be interested in some documentation on a 1971 CJ5 .
I happened by this jeep while on a deer hunting trip in east oregon. It was parked at a business and the employee was on a out of town assignment.
I contacted his fellow worker and asked permission to take a couple photos.
He agreed and added that the owner recently inherited the jeep from his grandfather whom bought it new.The jeep was used on a ranch and stored in a shed most of it's life. I guess you can take what you want from the pictures.A couple things I noticed where exhaust headers, swingout tire rack with no tailgate ?? sippered padding on roll bar,NO rust below cowl in the usual spot and original rear seat. This jeep is pretty much as it came new with a few dealer insalled options. Too me this would be the very best V-6 era jeep to own.enjoy. Mike

Couple more pics of Renegade II. There are a lot of these "ranch jeeps"
out there in barns and sheds and just sitting outside in the barnyard. Most aren't like this one though. I do believe this jeep is original in every respect as far as paint, body, seats, top and wheels.mike:)

Mike that is sooooo sweet. Alot of people would be suprised what you can do to revive the old paint and wheels on that. Love the hardtop with the Jeep logo so clean. This is a true barn find. Not like you see on Craigslist or Ebay. Are you after it? You should be. From what Ive seen you post this Cj screams "MIKE!

Thanks Pete I think there is a lot of sentimental value for the present owner as he probably grow up riding around with his grandfather in it.
Plus it's 300 miles away. But your right ,I would love to have it.:)mike

For reference, below is my 71 Ren2 all is stock except the wheels and BDS 2.5 springs. I sold it to a friend about 2 years ago.

It lived on a 350 acre estate all it's life and rarely left home, bedded down in a hay barn. I paid a really stupid low price for it.

i love those slotted rims! wish i could find a set of those and a hard top for my 5
