1978 cj7 304 v8 , 4speed which i think is out of a newer cj. Im pretty sure it has a stock transfer case.
A key broke off inside the key cylinder, do i need special tools to replace it with a new one. Is it a big deal? Weird thing is it still starts.

Besides basic hand tools...

You will need a Steering wheel puller and a steering wheel spring compressor. You can use cheap tools for this, I bought both for less than 30 dollars.

Perhaps a drill motor and bit as well. After a certain year, they used a screw to hold the cylinder into place. I don't remember when that was exactly, but it makes the job even easier.

The hardest part is pulling the lock ring off of the column shaft. The compressor allows you very little room to access it.

Lube everything you can in the column once it's open with white lithium grease.

1st what year is your jeep and can you post pic of column and key switch
reason the PO could have put anything in the CJ to get it going for him
