Hey guys, I am new to this forum and had a quick question. I am thinking about performing a Transmission /Transfer Case swap from the GM Turbo 400 /Q-trac to the SM465/NP205. My question is, is there a way to tell if a manual Transmission is operational without it being in the vehicle? Is shifting through the gears all one can do if you were at a junkyard looking at transmissions? Thanks for any input to this question!

You should be able to run it through the gears by rotating the input shaft.

Pull the top off and check the gears and shift forks.

I bought a T-15 tha had sat too long with water (didn't see it when I picked it up) and found the main cluster gear was pitted from the water as we're many of the bearings. :(

I like to go though any drivetrain item before installing. Saves problems. :D

I would just add that a close examination of all the gears as you rotate them. And sift thru the oil as you drain it to reveal any metal fragments. And if nothing else, at least replace the inexpensive plastic fork shoes.

I picked up a Transmission that shifted gears great but ended up being a train wrech. as posted already try ro see as many gears as possible and drain the fluid and look for signs of metal and water in it.. it its got water or alot if shaving dont get or dont pay full retail.

Thanks for all of the information guys! Its greatly appreciated!!
