I pulled the carter today to try and fix it. The problem was I had no idea what was wrong with it.
So I pulled it apart, laid all the parts out on the kitchen table (the wife hates it when I work on carbs). That's when I realized all the parts are not there. The accelerator pump check ball was missing, so was the small weight that sits on top of it. I dug out a old holley kit and used the check ball and weight from it.
I didn't have a kit for the carter so I cut new gaskets. When I checked the throttle shaft it was very loose. So I pulled the throttle plate out, removed the shaft and polished it. Then it was off to the shop. The shaft measured .310, so I made a pair of bushings that were .312 ID and .377 OD. Then I put the carb base in the mill and bored it to .375. After I pressed the bushings, I then reamed the bushings to make sure they aligned with each other.
When I reassembled and installed the carb it works great.

I'm still looking at fuel injection. I think it'll be a fun project.
But for the moment at least I can drive it. I've owned this jeep for about 5 years and today was the first time I've driven it on the road. It runs great.:chug:

Thorwon, I hope your carb issues are over. I think the Chief had a better idea by ditching the Carter.

If I had another carburetor I could use I would. But this is what I have so I try to make it work.
I am still reading about fuel injection and would love to go that route.
But for now the carter is still working. I put about 30 miles on it today and it's working great.
I have a complete fuel injection system from a 78 chevy and that's going to be the start of my system.

I have been running the Howell Jeep CJ fuel injection conversion kit for over 10 years and can say that fuel injection is a whole new can of worms, good luck with your conversion.
