I located my major steering problem
There were two bushings on top and two on bottom. I put them in the spring eye then ran the bolt through. Tons of play. I tightened them to the point of pinching both ends a lot. They are now bent and ruined. I don't know who makes the lift, pro comp on the absorber, not sure if springs are the same. I am really confused.

Wrong bushings. There should be ZERO play.

There were no spacers in the kit, just 8 black bushings, 4 bolts, 4 nuts, 2 shackles. So if I re order, what do I need? The shackles are destroyed, no chance of return

Your bushings old? A lot of play is not good. The new poly greaseable are really popular and love them on my rig. Good luck

Is this what you have? Photos would really help here. We're guessing. . .

That is the kit. I did not get the sleeves though. The bushings were kinda loose in the spring and were real dainty and thin. I guess I'll take a pic of the whole mess. NO teasing:D

Thanks for posting this, I am interested to see the outcome as I have been trying to chase down my loose steering problem for some time know. I will be checking this myself when I get home tonight.

Good Luck

if i hear one snide remark..........here are the pics of my destroyed shackles.

The black supplied bushings were so thin that tightening the shackles to this point was the only way to get the shackle to contact bushings.

73cj, my bushings were about half the size of the red ones that you have posted in the picture

Without knowing much about these yet, my only guess is your shackles were spaced at 2.5" maybe? And not for the 2" leafs like you have in the front. So that sucks, I'd say use them anyways but you'd need to mess around with bushings and stuff. I don't see why you couldn't otherwise bend the metal back out and reuse them. Yeah they will be a little weaker, but thats some thick steel.

So I went home last night, had the wife turn the whell back and forth and sure enough the shackles moved like you wouldn't bealeive... Thanks for the thred I have been chasing down this steering issue since I bought the thing. Guess its time to buy some shackles.

From what I've seen all cj shackles move a little, even with new bushings, so don't expect zero movement.

Ok, so I'm not expecting zero movement. My question is what should I order? Do they make shackles for a 2 inch leaf like gliryan said? I just want to order once with the correct shackles and bushings

Measure the width of your springs.
It doesn't even sound like the bushings were right for your shackles. The bushings should but up against each other in the spring eye. It looks like the shackles were wider than the bushings.

Germy, my comment was just thrown out there for everybody.
Your shackles and or bushings were just wrong somehow.

No, the bushings did not meet in the eye at all! The shackle measures 2.5 interior, spring is 2 inches. Maybe I should just order bushings, my fear is that I have compromised the welds

Old dog, did not mean to sound short! I needed to know that info! I was assuming that there should be no lateral movement. Now I know! Thanks!
