if I can spend 6000 usd.. is that enough

is that enough to expect to drive it after checking the brakes, steering, fluids and lights ?
I will bring any local jeep to my jeep guy who is building some incredible crawlers for himself and a couple others.. I trust him completely.
But lets talk about where to shop ?
Is it not best to look here on these and similar classifieds ?
How would you spend 6k for your first real jeep ?

I am not going rock crawling.. no rocks in Louisiana swamps.. I am not going to do much in the way of mudding as the places to do it are hard to come by these days and the hunting clubs do not allow it there..
I will find a way to do some Limited mud riding on occasions but am more interested in first : reliability
second : the traditional look
third : I can cross a small fallen tree and a washout or mud hole..
fourth : I want to be able to upgrade it over time and make it a great jeep, a little better every year or six months.. as i get funds I want to put some into it.. as long as I can get it reliable pretty quickly the rest will folllow

I liked this one at the negotiable price of $4500. I hawk Craigslist daily as well. Maybe search for local Jeep clubs in your area and see if they have a for sale forum.

kennison, when I was looking I checked out craiglist. I had about ten different jeeps when I started out. I narrowed it down to two, then one popped up 15 miles from here. $3500 and in great shape so I jumped on it.

I am setting my budget at 5K. around here you can get a decent conditioned CJ. I found one last weekend that had one panel that had rust holes and rest of it was just surface rust with AMC 304 for just 3600. I was on my way out to get it and he called..SOLD! patience will get you a good jeep. they are sparse here so testing my patience.
