If I had it to do over again? I should have never tried that almost straight up hill in the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere, and in 2wd. Scratch one cherry 73 CJ with a v8.
So... It came home last night in the midst of a Southern California heat wave. (I swear I almost baked my eyes out driving from Big Bear to Huntington Beach.)
On the way I stopped to get gas, and a fellow says to me... "What year is it?" To which I replied... It's a 79. He says to me... "Sweet Jeep man."
Here are some photos, because I know we all love photos...
... and so as not to make my TJ jealous...
I parked it right beside it...
Okay... Now to take some of this useful thinking you guys have thrown out there and put it to good use.
One thing is for sure... Being a former Marine, this navy blue has to go!
Thanks all!

Wanted to take a minute to let you all know... I am off and running...
Thus far after an exhausting weekend...
1) Installed the TBI Howell kit
- Lessons learned the bloody hard way...
-If you have a 79 CJ7 , you don't have the friggin Dual CTO, but you have to have one to pass CA emissions. The Howell instructions call out for PN-J3238932 but don't even bother. That part does not exist. It's a cruel and vicious hoax! Click here for Dr. Bob This is a reference to other CTO's that work. Get it before you start! I wound up going with the Borg-Warner EC958 from O-reilly for $35. Order one before you start. You will need a 5 port if you are in Cali. The difference between the Orange and Black one is about 10 degrees of difference when the thermostatic vacuum switch engages.
- Next, there is a series of pipes that connect to the smog pump via some strange valve. When you install the howell, you remove these. (Because if you don't there will be an ungodly large vacuum leak.) You will need to go to your local parts store, and get 1/2" 20 pitch thread bolts to seal these assuming you have the cast iron exhaust valve. (Just take the bolts that came out with you.) They will have two holes in each. Make sure to get the shortest ones you can. If there is only a half inch of thread, that's perfect. Mine were one inch, and just a wee too long.
Okay... enough of that...
2) Installed the Vanco hydroboost power brake kit
3) Installed the MORE offroad power steering box bracket
4) Installed the ford distributor, thanks for the tip! (Found out it was known as several things, among them TeamRush upgrade?)
5) Replaced Coil, Plugs, and built myself some nice Accel spark plug wires
6) Welded a few spots on the floorboards.
After three brutal days of hard labor, it is starting to shape up! Here is the gratuitous photo...
Just wanted to say thanks to all who jumped in with tidbits of advice. It was all useful thus far. There is more to go, much more, but I am off and running.
