I believe the part is called an ignition lock cylinder. Has anyone replaced one on a CJ. My CJ doesn't need a key to start and I'd really like to be able to fix that. I can get the part at Orileys for $30 but I wasn't sure what was involved in the install.

swapping the cylinder is pretty easy- you will need a steering wheel puller and a lock ring depressor tool, the rest of the tools are basic stuff you should have laying around- a chiltons or factory service manual will really help you here- step by step instructions.

I have been wanting to purchase a service manual.

Someone on here should have a link to where you can buy one- all I have is the chiltons- cant beat the price for @ $20.00

Tilt or No Tilt wheel?

You can have a key cut by the dealer to fix the problem. That would be one option and I think its the best one.

I can start the Jeep with out a Key, you think having a key cut would fix the problem? How can I get a key cut without having a key? Would a jeep dealership have a "mold" for the key? I remember I had a 99 camaro and lost the key and the dealership was able to have a key cut. Would this be the same concept? I have not changed the cylinder yet because the bolts to take the steering wheel off are stripped.

It would be a lot easier if I could go to Jeep with my vin and have a key cut...

I would have to say that if you can start it without a key your cylinder is worn out or shot. Getting a key made for it would be a waste of time and money. Replace the lock cylinder and it will come with 2 new keys that work.

That is what I was planning on doing. I already have the cylinder. The bolts are stripped on the steering wheel so I have been holding off on it.

Bolts? or bolt?

Replacing it will also let you see if something else needs to be done once you in the column.....horn cam, turn signal....etc

i can walk you through it if needed:chug:

I've read through the threads. I can do it without a problem... I think. There are 8 or so bolts on the steering wheel that are stripped.

The CJ is at my parents right now. The next time I am over there I will take pictures.

The ignition lock cylinder allows you to crank you engine to start fuel combustion right? The electronic switch connects the starter solenoid to your battery.

the lock cylinder is a tool....it is not absolutley necessary to have one....it keeps just anyone to drive off in your ride

hope that answers the question

heres a pic of the "guts" of the column that coincides with the starting procedure
