Build Thread I'm making progress on my project 79 CJ

Build Thread I'm making progress on my project 79 CJ
Over the weekend I shortened my front bumper 6" on each end and welded up a brush guard.

I took a double cardan front drive shaft from a 2001 Cherokee and shortened it 5 inches to use in the rear of my CJ. I removed the spacers from my cross member to gain ground clearance and I have wedge shims between the rear axle perches and the springs that leave the pinion pointing just a couple degrees below the Transfer Case output shaft, so the angles are good to go for a double cardan. I'll have an extra inch of ground clearance without the cross member spacers, and it's much more solid with the cross member bolted directly to the frame. Now I'm just waiting on the new CV style yoke to be delivered.

For anyone wanting to do this swap, the specs on the yoke for a 1310 series CV double cardan drive shaft are as follows:

Spicer part number 2-4-4341.
I ordered a Century Automotive CA2-4-4341 for $32 plus shipping from Northern Drivetrain.

Fits the late 70's Dana 20 and all Dana 300 's and works with a Double Cardan shaft. It's a 26 spline. 1975 and older Dana 20 's take a 10 spline like the Dana 18.

The Major Spline diameter is 1.146"
The Hub Diameter is 1.562".
Through Bore Length is 1.50".
They can be ordered from numerous sourcesonline for around $50.

Today I installed the cold air intake. Now I have room to upgrade to a 1995 YJ power brake booster.

I like that. Where did you get that set up for the Mc2100 carb? I have a Yj booster and master cylinder I got with my tub. Id keep it if I had the room like you said.

I made the boot that fits the carb out of heater duct parts and a mass air flow sensor adapter for a toyota supra. All told it cost me $15 to make the boot, and the cold air intake was $44 delivered on ebay. I painted it all black wrinkle finish to make it look a little less ricer. :D

I started in on the front Aussie locker project. Been tied up this weekend but I found a little time late last night to get a lot of it done.

I forgot to add a few updates. The double cardan rear drive shaft has been working great for me, and was even tested hard off road. Same goes for the Aussie front locker.

I had the opportunity to test her out on an RTI ramp at the Jeep car show Saturday and was very happy with how it did. I also took it off road on a buddy's private trails and managed to climb up a really tough rocky cliff. I'm loving the locker!!! :chug:

P.S. It's kind of fun having one of the few old CJ's at a Jeep show full of JK's and TJ's! :D

CJ's ARE the cool jeeps. I chomping at the bit for mine to get finished at the paint shop. BTW, damn good lookin' rig. I'm green with envy.

Thanks! :chug:

Got my new 1 piece axles installed in the AMC20 . I also got the steel tubing bent to make a truss. I'll find time in the next few weeks to cut it to shape and get it welded up.

The 4.7 liter stroker motor is coming along. I have a 1995 4.0 block that's freshly bored .060" over, a set of sealed power pistons, sealed power rings, 252h comp cam, sealed power lifters, high volume oil pump, carter electric fuel pump, clevite .010" under rod bearings, sealed power .010" under main bearings, new cam bearings, and all the gaskets.

I'm going back to the carburetor for now, but I have the makings for multiport fuel injection for the old CJ in case I ever decide to turn to the dark side. :)

And there's more!

That's some nice flex for a CJ :chug:
